When I travel I bring two handguns, a g42 that always stays with me and a g20 that I keep tucked away, just on the odd chance I get stranded some place I don't want to be or have reason to believe there could be an imminent threat. Ever seen Texas chainsaw massacre?

My family’s ranch straddled the Kerr/Bandera county line near Camp Verde, which is right between (shocker!) Kerrville and Bandera. That’s about 90 minutes or so from New Braunfels.... and a second cousin was a Guadalupe County deputy in Seguin, right down the road from New Braunfels. I spent most of my youth traipsing through those hills and swimming in the creeks of the Hill Country

That part of the earth means more to me than anywhere else!

May you both have a safe and scenic trip, and bring home the bacon!

Stay safe.
I visited Bandera today. We popped in to the 11th Street cowboy bar. What a place!
Beautiful cowboy country around Bandera, tx!

The Cowboy Capital of the World!

Our ranch was midway between Kerrville and Bandera on Hwy 173. It was nestled about two miles West down a 1 lane road along Verde Creek, then about three more miles on caliche road, from the Camp Verde General Store. We had about 1600 acres for many years, then when I was about 9 or so it was whittled down to the "best" 297 acres. That was my playground for my childhood/teenage years.

A couple of really neat historical monuments around, first was the Camp Verde Camel Forts (which we drove past on the way to the caliche road) that was a civil war outpost that still stands as it did back then armyhistory.org › the-u-s-armys-camel-corps-experiment
and the Battle of Bandera Pass http://www.usgenwebsites.org/TXBandera/banderapass2.html which allegedly occurred between Rangers and Comanches at the top of the hill above Verde Creek...

Like I said, to me that valley is a slice of heaven indeed :).

Let us know how the hunt turns out!

Stay safe.

I dont always do what's logical.
Sometimes I do what I want.

I guess there's a reason that I only have one 1911, one ds 9mm, one .380, and one .22 auto pistol, and a wheelbarrow full of revolvers.

I will toss in a spare box of 7.62x39 in case it really does hit the fan like the media is hoping.

Solid choice

You reasoning is exactly why I'm on the hunt for an sp101 for carry. Most practical? Probably not but cool as can be

We pulled out of Gruene. Tx about 730am, and pulled in my shed about midnight last night. Mrs had packed some lunch for us, so we only stopped three times.
We love Texas and Texans and hope to visit again next winter.
Until then we pray for our nation.

In the spirit of this thread, I am glad that I chose my model 66 s&w. It rode comfortably on my hip while we traveled day and night on the road. I have great confidence and familiarity with revolvers, despite their inherent capacity limitations.
Once we arrived at our destination I carried my little lcp, as is my usual. I'm not sure I have ever penned my carry strategy for the lcp. In a nutshell, I act as if I am unarmed. I will only draw in defense of life.

They do have one intimidation factor that semi auto's don't, visible chunks of lead in the exposed cylinders.

I agree, it's like gazing into a crystal ball. You can foresee the future. 20200216_163120.jpg
Once I started a thread about opinion on the most formidable looking carry gun available.
It quickly spiraled down into me getting flamed about the concept. Regardless this model revolver tops my personal "most intimidating " list. That may well be my reasoning for carrying it.

I'm glad to hear that you had a safe and enjoyable trip. I need to find a nice IWB holster for my 686 to carry in some situations. Have a good spring. I'm praying that you Farmers don't have to deal with the flooding this season like last year in the midwest.

Another nice shed antler with a good looking S&W!

It was a rough one in 2019. I have always said that farmers do a years work in 20 weeks. 10 spring/10 fall. Last year we couldn't wait for 2019 to end.....
It's not looking so bad now! Lol
We shall all persevere.
Every knee shall bow. Be sure it is sooner instead of later.

travel firearms is an interesting topic. i couldn’t travel defenseless. armored farmer made judicious choices.

i did much driving up and down and across the eastern usa during obama ammo droughts. my always come along piece, among 1-2 others, was a bond arms derringer with several barrels. actually on me, where lawful with one of several ccw permits, was the b.a. with 410/45lc barrel. gaping barrel intimidation, check. 410 ammo in every walmart along the way, check. a choice of barrels means some ammo always available, check. plus, a b.a. is a fun plinker with either 38sp or 9mm.

now i fly as a snowbird and generally bring three declared, secured pieces with some ammo in a checked bag. always a naa bugout1 22lr for 24x7 ccw. almost always a ruger sr22 for outdoors plinking and occasional ccw. third is something small & centerfire, usually a 38sp snubbie. worried about falling afoul of mag limits and defense ammo restrictions my mags don’t exceed ten and my ammo is plain jane fmj or wadcutter.

We ended up cutting our trip short. Our conscience was bothering us so we headed home.
No music at Gruene hall.
I missed a big pig on a hog hunt.
We fled Tx with our tails tucked.
Maybe next year!
I loved Luchenbach. It reminds me of our Moonshine store here at home.

With Ca on virus lockdown beginning Thursday night, on Friday I still had to make a run to Needles to pick up a trailer and get it back to a friends RV shop in the 29 Palms/ Yucca Valley area for warranty repair work.

I blasted off early and left Needles in the early am. I passed about 200 snowbirds heading back North up Hwy 95 to Vidal, then I saw literally NO ONE across Hwy 62 to 29 Palms.

With law enforcement not wanting to be out and about without cause, and not knowing what to expect in the wide-open desert miles from cellular service, I planned for scenes out of The Road Warrior and brought the BCM and my G17.

Fortunately it was the road less travelled, and the guns merely got a 10 hour vacation.

You really never know what you may run into in the boonies, so the Smith 66 was a darn good choice in my book. I’m glad you had a peaceful trip!!

Stay safe.

The s&w66 is my most recent gun purchase, but it was instantly my favorite handgun. I don't know what is wrong with me. I have a tried and true SR9C with rwo 17rd and two 10 rd mags, weapon light, Crossbreed supertuck holster.....all the bells and whistles for ccw....but my soul prefers the model 66. My brain screams SR9C! I have combat training with the SR9C!
Literally ⅓ the ammo capacity! What is wrong with me?
Im a dumbass!
I'm sick...sick in the head!
Road trip guns are a favorite topic of mine. I have several schools of thought in that area.....
*His and hers LCPs iwb ...maybe backed by a carbine.
*1911 and several 8rd mags .45acp
* SR9C 17rd mags, weapon light.
* s&w 2.5" model 66 .357mag. Probably the least capable.
Does anyone else refuse to choose the most practical (tactical).

When I'm at my mom's house in East Tennessee I use my 6" gp100 as my woods wandering gun. There are black bear, dogs and 2 legged vermin in those woods but I'm just so comfortable and accurate with that gun I think it's ideal. A 45 or 10mm would hold more and be similar in result but that 357 magnum just feels right.

Sure, I’m guilty of that all the time. I could carry a GLOCK 19 off duty, but I carry an LC9 or an LCP II instead. Easier to hide under a t-shirt and shorts when it’s 100+ degrees outside.

Stay safe.

@Armorered farmer,

Like you I know logically that a full size 9mm semi-auto that holds 15 rounds with a spare 15 round magazine on my belt is far superior to a revolver. And like you I keep having the desire for a revolver. In my case it is a S&W Model 69 44 Magnum with 4” barrel. Of course I will use tamer loads in it but there is something about those big holes.

Maybe it is a Texas State of Mind thing.

My Father-in-Law and wife lived in Yucca Valley. I had a cousin there too. They are all gone now.
