Got a brand new weatherby vanguard deluxe as a christmas gift and I'm excited about this cartridge my longest shots on deer will be about 350 I know the gun is capable of much more than that. Which factory load should I go with? And after I get some cases I might try handloading as the ammo is a little pricey, any fans of this round out there?

Thanks
Ian

I'm a fan, I've seen it in action on deer. A buddy used hp ammo and it absolutely devastated that doe, innards were mush and multiple broken ribs from the exit wound. Bang-flop all the way. Congrats!

anything with Weatherby adds about $20 to the ammo price.

Nice caliber. I am a huge .257 fan. I shoot a .25-06 myself, and my rifle loves the 115 grain Combined Technology Ballsitic Silver Tips. It has good penetration and superb damage to the vitals. Every shot has been a bang flop.

The 100gr Weatherby ammo w/100gr Norma Soft point is the least expensive. It runs ~38.00/box. Second least expensive ammo is Weatherby w/100gr Hornady PtSpt. Either will run 3,450fps from 24"bbl, 3,500fps from 26"bbl. Either is sub-moa from my Weatherby Vanguard.

Factory Ammo for this cartridge isn't cheap, but all is good.

I've only shot one box of factory ammo, with the Norma bullet. I bought it because it was cheaper than unprimed, empty Weatherby brass. Go figure !!!

I normally use 100gr Hornady PtSpt's as I bought a large quantity of "blems" several years back. Only thing wrong with them is that they have some stains on jacket that weren't polished out by Hornady, so were "rejects".

They shoot accurately and perform perfectly on deer.

I use primarily RL25 at 74.0gr for 3,650fps from my rifle. I use a +1.0" at 100yds as this gives me a point-blank range of nearly 300yds. A LOOONG shot in my neck of the woods.

Sight in 1.1" high at 100yds for 200yd zero. This will put you ~4" low at 300 and 12" low at 400yds.
+2.5" at 100yds will give you +3" at 200yds, zero at 300yds and ~10" low at 400yds. Essentially point and click to 350yds.

Other powders I've used with excellent results are:
IMR-7828 @ 72.0gr for 3,600fps
IMR-4350 @ 63.5gr for 3,450fps (duplicates factory ammo)
H-4350 @ 64.0gr for 3,550fps (very accurate my rifle)

All above loads used Fed. 215primers and Weatherby cases.

You can re-form 7mmRemMag brass, and will end up ~0.15" shorter than factory brass, but otherwise entirely useable. It will require fire-forming to blow out shoulder to full dimensions. Reformed brass or brass from other venders such as Federal, Remington will be 2-3gr lower in capacity than the Norma mfg. Weatherby brass. As such, they will require reducing charges 1-2gr. (See Speer #14 manual. This explains the descrepancy from other data souces.).

with a 120gr Nosler Partition or Swift 120gr A-frame bullet, it's suitable for anything in N.America except for brown/grizzly bear. For those, I'd use something a good bit bigger.
The .257wbymag is one of my favorite cartridges....

The .257 Weatherby is a flat shootin rig. I shoot a 115 Nosler Partition in front of 68 grains of 7828ssc. CCI 250 primer. This load is good for 3400 fps on my chrono. I've shot a 25/06 since 1972 with the same bullet going 3080. That Weatherby is a hammer. 320 fps makes a difference! I have not shot the 100 grainers but they are even faster. I bought the 100 grainers and pulled the bullets, they were on sale cheaper than brass. But....it's not Christmas yet, how did you get to open your presents?

I have one I'm a huge fan killed 2 deer with it this year my doe was 420 yards away she didn't take one step! My buck was only 175 yards away knocked him off his feet! I used the 100 grain factory ammo the spitzers the cheep stuff but on my buck the bullet did come apart right before exit.

I've had my 257 WBY mag for a couple years now. It's the king of commercial quarter-bores in terms of energy and velocity.

I got it early from someone I wasn't going to get to see tomorrow! Haha I can't wait to see this sucker shoot, also can't decide on optics wanna stay under 700 and of course I'm using talley rings

I like the 100 gr. Factory loading for 200-400 yds. But overall the heavier loads are better (117 -120 gr.). Maybe 110 gr. Accubond too. I lost a deer after two broadside shots at just under 100 yds. Massive initial blood loss then he ran into a corn field. Use heavier loads for close shots or be very precise.

"Nothing Shoots Flatter, Hits Harder or is More Accurate".

When I got my .257 Vanguard S2 Sport, I upgraded from the VX-2 4-12x 40 AOs I have on my other Weatherbys to a VX-3 3.5-10x 40 CDS. When I shoot it back to back with my .308, I can tell the difference in the optics. That VX-3 is a great optic. I love my .257 WBY.

Accubonds work.

I took a doe last year with the 110gr Accubond. She was quartering to me and I took her on the front of the shoulder. The bullet cut the scapula in two, put a 1 1/2"X5 " hole in the rib cage and went all the way to the pelvis. Nice mushroom and weighed 67gr. She didn't even kick.
