Greetings all,
After reading several posts in this forum section I believe I just might be in the right place,
I've had an old German WBY MK V sleeping in the rack for many years and it's time to wake him up.
It's a 12:1 twist, #1 contour barrel sporter from the 60's (lightly used, belonged to my dad).
I am not new to reloading, certainly not a benchrest, nor competition shooter, but I am confident in my reloading skills and equipment, I do partial shoulder bumping (0.002") and finished rounds come out nice and concentric (+/- 0.002) out of the forster seater.
Scope setup is solid and tight, with an old reliable VX-II Leupold 3x9
Back to the Mark V,
To start with I noticed some forward play in the recoil lug, so I recently performed what I believe is a decent bedding job with Devcon 10110, extending past the action lug into the chamber about 1". (I personally do not believe in leaving light barrels whipping around like a puppy's tail). The action and barrel fit inside the stock like a glove, nice and snug, and come out quite easy, no pushing or pressure points that I can observe.
I also removed the factory pressure point at the forend since the stock is a beautiful claro walnut piece, and finished the barrel channel barely freefloated, I can slide a dollar bill, a bit tight, particularly below the front swivel.
I have worked in the lumber and wood trade for 25+ years (We kiln dry lumber and have a large machining shop), So believe me when I say ALL wood will move around with changes in Relative Humidity, it's just its nature.
I went to the range this past weekend and got started with some handloads, (Fed 215, IMR7828-71.5 gr, 140 Nosler Acc-Bonds, COAL 3.290", 5 shot aver. 3180 fps).
I immediately noticed a dramatic drop in POI with the first 2 shots (to be expected of course), so I adjusted the reticle and let the barrel cool down.
Here comes the interesting part,
The next two - 3 shot groups came out like identical twins, if I were to place them on top of each other all 6 holes would align (literally), unfortunately the groups are almost 2 1/2" inches wide.
First shot 1" to the right, 2nd shot walked to the left, and 3rd shot a bit further left.
As a reference I shot another 3 shot group using new WBY 130 gr ammo resulting in a nice 1" triangle group. (I let the barrel cool down 20 min. after every group). So I am confident the barrel has potential.
I would love to hear some ideas, I confess I am a very frugal reloader and shooter, since I believe in letting this pencil barrels cool down completely, and thus end up spending more time waiting than shooting.
Thanks all for your patience, look forward to some ideas.
