.280 or .260 remington ?

Well, for my personal use, I plan on getting a .260 Remington prone rifle built one of these days. Sling 139gr Lapua Scenars or the 142 SMK with negligible recoil for the local 3x600 matches.

What you would/should buy depends on what you're gonna use it for though.

The .280 is a far more useful round in general. More powerful, better bullet selection, much better commercial ammo availability. Recoil of the .280 is a non-issue for most shooters. Unless you have a specific want for a short action rifle, the answer seems obvious.

I've used my .280 Remington to kill bull elk, Mule deer, Blacktail deer, Whitetail deer, antelope, Black bear, coyotes, and varmits. Fantastic cartridge.

'Course, I'm kinda prejudiced. I've been using a .280 Rem. since 1960. :)

260 has short action, slightly less recoil and would be outstanding deer size game cartridge 120 to 140 gr bullets. If you reload, lighter varmint bullets are available in the 85-100 gr range. I shoot 87 gr speers out of my 6.5 x 55.

280 has long action and is a good deer, elk, black bear cartridge. It falls between the 270 and 30-06 and will perform and recoil very similar. If you reload, there are a lot of choices in in 7mm(284) bullets from 100 to 175 gr with 140 to 165 being the most popular in factory ammo.

Both are great and you would be pleased with either. I would vote for the 260, but I am a little biased. I love that brass, 243, 260, 7mm-08, 308.

Good Luck

i really like the idea of the 260 , using 120 to 140 grainers, much like a 6.5 swedish. genteel in recoil, yet nice wind cutting bullets.

Both the .260 and .280 are not considered "common" rounds. Yes there are a lot of both being shot but mostly by shooters who have had them for decades.

If you don't so your own reloading I would suggest buying a .270 Winchester since the ammo is more common, the price of the ammo is less and there is more variety available for the .270 over both Remington rounds.

If forced to choose between the Remington rounds I would choose the .280 because it has more factory loads available than the .260. The Ballistics are better for the .280 also, actually it's the best of the 3 I mentioned.

Again, I suggested the .270 Win only because of ammo availability and price because the .280 Rem is superior to both the .270 and .260 (based on Ballistic charts from Remington of all 3 rounds at the same 140 gr bullet weight)

Two vastly different cartridges

One's a short action pussycat that is ballistically equivalent to the 6.5 Swede and the other is capable of taking any north american game save the dangerous bears.
The .260 is more of a beginner's rifle. It will be easier to shoot and is quite deadly. Something about a 140 grain bullet at moderate velocities that kills way out of proportion to what the ballistic charts say.
Sadly, the .260 isn't as popular as it ought to be. Maybe it is.
