New to the forum and really reloading.
My question is can you seat a bullet past the cannelure safely.
I'm loading 180gr spbt hornadys into correct length brass.
However I made a few dummy rounds and used the rod method the check my rifle, Savage 110.
OAL for the bullet is supposed to be 3.245, rod measurement is 3.215 and dummies measure3.22.
Cannelure is right at the edge at 3.22

Help am I an idiot??
Thanks for the help in advance.

"My question is, can you seat a bullet past the cannelure safely."

Yes. There is no "supposed to be" about cartridge length, what you see in the books is what the book makeers used in their rifle; your's is different. Set the OAL as you want it and develop your load.

Guess this might be a stupid question but shouldn't the round chamber in my rifle with the cannelure where it was designed to be?

Ranger335 is exactly correct. Each rifle is individual. Yes, your rifle should, and likely will chamber a bullet seated to the cannelure. But for optimal accuracy, it's usually beneficial to seat the bullet so that it is only .010" or so from the rifling.
Rifles are very individual. My Swiss K-31's (.30 cal.)have VERY short throats and bullets seated to the cannelure will be WAY to long and won't even chamber. Conversely, my target 1903A3 (30-06)has seen LOTS of use and as a result the throat is somewhat eroded. As such I can't seat a bullet long enough to get it close to the rifling before I run out of space in the magazine.

Sunray, guess that is what I will have to do.
On these particular bullets it can't be used so it will be ignored.
As I am new to reloading thought I would ask the question rather than mess something up, like my gun or me.
