Anyone have experience loading 160gr ftx bullets with h335? Curious about charge weight, bullet seating off the cannelure to get closer to lands and if you still crimped off the cannelure. Reloading for savage model 170

I say load them long, crimp in the cannelude, if your test round sticks to the rifling trim the brass back some more and retest.

H335 was on the list to try but only got 8208, IMR4895 and IMR4166 tested. Loaded to 2.550” COL. They were acceptable, for me, at 100 yds with open sights. Good luck.

When I had my 170 I found it to be even more sensitive about OAL feeding from the tube than either of my Marlins. I highly recommend making powderless/unprimed cases to test feeding before loading a round. The lifter will tell you how long you load, not the lands - unless you are planning on single-feeding by hand and not using the magazine tube/lifter at all.. in which case, "Oh, well, that's very different, then! Never mind." Emily Litella, November 15,1975. ;)

I've reloaded .30-30 for 30 years... it was the first bottleneck cartridge I ever loaded for... and I've never used H335. I first started with the slightly faster H322, then just moved to IMR3031. Not that H335 won't work, I just don't care for how it works.

I would start with seating to the cannelure and crimping... to see what kind of accuracy you get from that. As GeoDude suggests, maybe work with your rifle to find out how far out the rifling leade really is... it might be closer than you think, already... and there is always that feeding issue with pump/lever guns. I have a Savage 99 in .30-30, with the rotary magazine... crimp means nothing to me, but the OAL does... and it will give me fits if I am .0001" over book OAL.
