$300 Riflescope Choice for Savage .270

First let me say that is my first bolt gun, and my first scope purchase. I have done some reading and research and learned a good deal of basic info from http://www.opticsplanet.com

I am not a hunter, at least not currently. This is primarily for sport, shooting at 100-200yards. This rifle has a long action and thus will limit some of my choices. I have identified some preliminary candidates/brands and would appreciate any opinions or experiences.

I like the flexibility of variable magnification so my preliminary choice is in the range of 3-9 X 40. My preliminary choices are: Bushnell Elite 3200, Sightron II, Nikon Buckmaster. There may even be a couple Leupold and Burris models in the $300 range that would suit my needs.

I am familiar with the basic details, adjustments etc. I am not fully familiar with all the reticle choices, but I know that I do not want mildot. Just based on the details given for most of these products, it is easy to compare the measurable statistics, but not so easy to compare the glass quality.

www.swfa.com, Nikon Team Primos 3-9x40 (it's a monarch with a marketing label attached.) I have two of them, and they beat my Leupold vx-iii 2.5-8x36 hands down.

Or the Busnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 is also highly regarded in that price range, though I like a little more eye relief.

The Nikon Omega / Slugmaster is the best value going in scopes right now, IMO - even superior to the very good "Team Primos" Nikons. As someone mentioned, these are all actually Monarchs. In fact, I'm sporting a major hogleg about that Slugmaster 1.65-5x36 for a variety of different rifles: fighting AR15, .45-70s, muzzleloaders, slug gun, .357 mag carbine, .30-30 levergun, DG rifle, etc., etc.

So bottom line, I think your short list is excellent. There may be a Burris or Weaver I'd consider as well, if I found a great deal on one. Leupolds are overpriced for what you get in my book, but they're good too, obviously.

The Nikon Team Primos has great glass and mechanicals, but that BDC reticle drives me crazy.

The SampleList also has a Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9x40 with a silver finish for $179. That too is a very nice scope. Lots of Team Primos refurbs for $179 as well

The Burris Fullfield II scope is an enhanced model of the Fullfield version. It boasts a more forgiving sharpness and eye clarity for positioning fore and aft, and left and right. Using modern alloys and machining techniques the weight has been reduced by 20%-25% without affecting durability or optical performance.

Most scopes have three or four potential leak paths in the eyepiece/power ring area. The Fullfield II has but two. These leak paths are sealed with special quad seals rather than low-tech O-rings. everyone has there own opinion about which scope is best for that dollar.
me personally, I do have a preference toward leupold. I just bought my second one used online for 185. with shipping..plus leupold has a lifetime warranty that goes with the scope not original purchaser.. so now I have 2 leupold 3x9x40 vxII.. so if you are not in a rush, take your time and shop..you will more than likely find what you are looking for at a good price...

I think you made a good deal on a good choice. The Fullfield IIs are nice scopes - just so long as you don't need warranty work.

My FFII 4.5-14x42 went South last year. Sent it to Burris. 10 days later I had a brand new one in my hands. Is this the poor warranty service you speak of?

When my 4 year old broke the eyecups off of my FFII binos I sent it to Burris to be repaired assuming I'd have to pay for my kids actions.
But no, Burris sent me a brand new pair for free!
Pretty good service if you ask me.
You'll like your FFII, I like my 1.75-5X20 FFII alot.
