it's been too long since I've been on here! I think the last time I was on here I was talking about a 44 mag.& lest any one accuse me of just flip flopin & wasting ya'lls time I decided not to get a 44 mag. rifle.i had taken my 223 out to see how it would do on deer and I shot a nice doe at about 60yds.and she ran maybe 75.so for a short range gun i'm covered. Now,i would like a gun with a little more thump & range for elk & bear & longer shots.so I've decided on a 300WM. I just can't decide on a model. I either want a ruger hawkeye,a Remington 700 sps(only if their QC is of a higher standard than it was being)or a savage 114,111 or 116.which would you get & why? I was also looking at some boyds laminate stocks & the only 2 options for the savage 116 is blind mag or drop box.the 116 i'm looking at has a hinged floorplate.so would the db magazine model work with the hinged floor plate?

Absolutely go with a synthetic stock, since all I have ever fired are softer recoiling than their wooden counterparts. My Ruger was the hardest kicking rifle in the stable. It could have just been the way the rifle fit me though ymmv. It killed on one end and maimed on the other LOL.

Of the options listed the Ruger is the only one I'd consider. My 1st choice by a wide margin would be a Winchester in 300 WSM. Stainless/synthetic all the way.

Ruger would be a closer option if they currently offered 300 WSM. They made a few, but are not often seen.

The WSM will do anything a standard 300 Win mag will do, and do it with less recoil, better accuracy and from a slightly lighter more compact rifle.

Just got the Ruger Guide Gun in 300 win mag and love it so far. Although only 20 rounds through it.

My .300 Win Mag is a Browning A bolt, stainless & synthetic. It has the Boss muzzle brake - shoots well & recoil is very manageable, but it is noisy as heck - can't be shot without hearing protection, but that is its only drawback. It is a good caliber for elk & long range shooting - too much gun for everything else I hunt.
I have a Rem 700 & a Savage in other calibers - both reliable guns, but I like the A bolt also.

has any one heard if remingtons QC is up?thanks for your help,i hope others will comment on this thread too.:)

A guide out West found that clients who shot 300 magnums missed and flinched a lot resulting sometimes in lost game.

The guide, Les Bowman developed the 7mm Remington Magnum case and sold the concept to Remington.

The 300 magnums kick a little too much for me also. I got a well made custom last year in .300 Win. Mag. and unless I get the 150's to shoot it's going in the back row or out the door.

I got another 7mm Magnum this year. That's plenty of rifle for most of us.

Get a rifle with one of those new soft thick Decelerator recoil pads.

i bought 3 left hand nib old stock model 70 CF winchesters on close out for less than 500.00 a piece. and this one is in .300WM and with a healthy dose of RL-22 or IMR 4831sc and the 165gr A-max bullet is a sub moa rifle. i read about the qualty issues with the pre-FN 70,s,but i can say the three i bought have had no issues at all. eastbank.

eastbank that is a beautiful rifle.where did you find a left handed model 70?the only reason I didn't make mention in my post about a model 70 is because they didn't come left handed.

the lgs knew i was left handed and when they closed the winchesters out,i also bought a 7mm-mag and a SS .270 along with a win 94 big bore in 444 marlin. the price was very good and tho they are pre-FN the quality is top shelf with no problems at all. eastbank.
