308 Load development

Hello, new to this forum.

I have a pretty extensive handgun competition background which also includes reloading. I have recently jumped into the "long range world" (as if I need another hobby!)

I have read some threads and performed a search but wanted some newer info. Sooooo....

I purchased a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in 308 with a Leupold VX-3 Target scope. I plan on shooting long range at some point (500-1000 yards) and would like a good starting point for reloading data.

I'm currently shooting Hornady 55gr Super-performance ammo.

Any bullet/ powder suggestions?

Well, the 308 is a great caliber to load for with a wide selection of powders and projectiles to choose from. Typically you are going to see folks shooting projectiles ranging from 155 up to just over 200 grains. Just to list a few popular projectiles:
155 gr Lapua Scenar
168 gr Sierra Matchking
175 gr Sierra Matchking
175 gr Hornady Match
178 gr Hornady AMAX
several others... etc. etc.

Popular powders are going to be Varget, IMR-4064, WIN748, IMR3031 and a few others..

From my little bit of experience I find the 168 SMKs over IMR4064 to be more accurate in the short to medium range (100-600yards) and the 175 SMK over IMR4064 to be the combo of choice when reaching out past 600.. I've only shot to 600 yards but I tend to work mostly with the 175 SMKs just so I'm familiar with that projectile as I try to progress out past 600... Anyhow, YMMV but best of luck to you...

Your A-Maxx and VMaxx bullets are going to be the better bullets. I just use pulled bullets, even for my long range stuff. I load for over 15 different guns that are in the .30 caliber range. 3 of the are Remmy 700's. My 308 likes IMR 4895, AR COMP, and a few others i can't think off the top of my head. Bullets i like for 100-300yd range are 147FMJ.

Got to second the IMR-4985. BL-2 worked almost as well in my 700 Tactical, but the hotter the load the bigger the group. 4895 was just the opposite and with 168gr SMK it would stay under 1/2 MOA if I did my part. On a good day it would do 1/4 MOA.
