Hi,
New to this forum and looking forward to interacting with like minded folks. Quick question for ya'll. With the political changes that will be taking place in the next month or so, I know that the assault weapons ban will be brought back up. I would like a 308 AR configuration in the 1200- 1600.00 range any suggestions?? Ive been looking at the AR 10 DPMS but also the Armalite. Which would you choose? Why? Why Not??? Again, glad to be with you folks.

If you want feedback from folks they will need a little bit more info on what you envision using the weapon for.

What do you think you will use the weapon for?

Home Defense, Hunting, Casual plinking, Competition shooting, Just in case, Cause I want it, etc. All equally good reasons in my book

Is the heavier and more expensive 7.62x51/.308 round what you need or is the 5.56/.223 better suited for your purposes.

Are you settled on the AR platform or open to others such as the G3/FAL/Saiga platforms.

Does your budget include buying sights for the weapon which can rapidly eat into a budget.

My DPMS LR-308 is used for target shootinf as far as I can find a range to shoot it at. For 1K, you get an excellent weapon. The DPMS shooters are now starting to compete with the bolt action guys, if that tells you anything about accuracy.

I went with the DPMS over all the other .308 platform simply because I like their product line. Armalite is considerably more expensive. Depending on the model, you should also budget as much as you can into a sighting system of your choice. 5-700 dollars will get you a respected setup, whether it is irons, and co-witnessed optics, or a good middle of the road scope.

Mine is set up with a Nikon Buckmaster and a Harris bipod, and works better than I can load for it ( yet )

That's pretty much into all the major choices; AR10, M1A, FAL, HK91.

Wide open field. Don't limit your choice to the DPMS just because it looks familiar. Fine rifles, but don't miss the other choices.

Downside to the DPMS/AR10 style is magazine cost.

If ban worries are on your mind magazines should be important.

On the HK91 side magazines are 3-4 bucks each, FAL mags are 8-12 depending on quality.

Something to keep in mind.

I had a DPMS LR 308 that I bought used with six magazines and a middle of the road scope. It shot very well and was very accurate. You are warned not to shoot surplus ammo in this particular rifle and also not to shoot handloads. I shot surplus, a couple hundred rounds before I sold it. I felt that the rifle was too long, too heavy and the price of ammo if you stick with the mfg recommendations too expensive. Someone offered me a little more than I paid so off it went.

The uses for this particular weapon system will be long range shooting/ varmint hunting (just hunting much larger varmints). Home/ Property defense with times the way they are and with the changes in the political landscape that r coming. I need this system as quickly as possible before another ban is brought up (its coming when hussein gets elected). I have considered optics and have looked at a couple different setups so would need a piccatiny rail system with the attachments to complete the package. I already own a good variety of .223 and 7.62 but wanted something with a good bit more reach and kinetic energy. Realistic shots in my area are 500-700 yds on any particular area on my property so as long as I can reach this far and maintain enough knock down, should be fine.

I'd go with the .308 then. I've shot a number of different brands and have always liked the ..308 round. My preference is the AR by Armalite. The mags are a little expensive but the do work and I've never had a problem with shooting. Mine is a 10B so it can't have a scope, but I like open sights more.

That is a pretty good review of the Armalite rifles. If I was going to buy an AR10 I'd go with Armalite, but that's just me and my opinion; I'm sure DPMS makes a good rifle as well.

With very few exceptions of all the .308's I've shot they are all pretty good.
The only problem I have ever had is the attempts by owners of battle rifles, (Mxx, ARxx,) to make them into high performance, long range target rifles. They are not and were never intended for that purpose. I'm not trying to knock anyone who does the mods to a particular battle rifle, however I do take issue when dumping more money on accessories than they paid for the rifle then gripe about the the gun not being accurate.

I totally agree, realistically all I need is a gun that has enough power to cause enough damage within an area 6"x6" or at least provide enough cavitation in the wound bed to immobilize the intended recipient. 308 should fit the bill, definetely not a tack driver but as long as its kinda' close couple inches won't make much of a difference center mass.

The M1A is a good rifle that is chambered in the OP's specified cartridge. I personally would go with a FAL or DPMS AR-10.

I bought a Saiga in .308 for less than $500, it's accurate.

With decent handloads, and some factory loads, my DPMS LR 308B is a consistently sub moa rifle. This includes soft point hunting ammo. The worst of the groups with the worst ammo were 2 1/2" @ 100yds.
I've had it a year with over 1000 rds downrange & no failures, no jams etc. using US factory ammo & my handloads. This performance is not unusual & actually considered to be the norm for these rifles. Magazines are $25.00 ~ $30.00 depending on where you shop. Some coated foreign ammo is not recommended however. If you don't handload, buy the Federal Power shok 150 grain ammo at Wal Mart, 13.95 / box & shoot sub moa in my rifle. (thats almost as cheap as foreign surplus stuff)
The only upgrade I STRONGLY recommend is a better trigger. The stock one is horrible.

I think you will be happy with most of the 308 size rifles being produced now by the majors. Supposedly RRA is making one that uses relatively inexpensive FAL magazines.

The chambering that intrigues me is something in a 6.5mm, either 260 Remington or 6.5 Creedmore, but you are right. If I want something like this I need to act soon, as I don't favor the likelihood of an AWB being reinstituted.
