I saw a vortex 1x4 crossfire 30mm tube scope on midway for $109. helluva deal. I want to put that scope on a rem 572-- 22 rifle. will I need some special base and rings? if so how much of a hassle will getting those be??

thanks,

Bull

IMO, they let a little more light through (if optics are equal), so if you think you're after more dawn and dusk hunting opportunities.....................maybe. They do constrain your ring choices some and might not mount quite as low, if you want to get as close as possible to the bore axis.
I have both 1" and 30mm, and I can't say the 30m absolutely justifies the typical cost difference..

30mm generally has more adjustment range. Otherwise I don't see much advantage, especially when mounting it on a .22. That is a pretty good deal though.

A 30mm tube is stronger, it doesn't transmit more useable light than a 1" tube. In less costly scopes some companies put 1" internals in 30mm scopes to save money, so you don't get more adjustment. Bases are the same for 1" and 30mm, rings cost more for 30mm.

Yes, ideally it will be stronger and give more adjustment range (which may not matter in a .22 application). Light transmission is a function of the size of the objective and magnification-exit pupil, tube doesn't matter.

I agree with the posts above... a large tube doesn't make the scope any clearer or brighter.. Only bigger and heavier. And for a 22?

I feel you would be much better off if you spent the extra money you would spend on the special rings and bases and upgrade you choice of glass.

You can get a 1" Vortex Crossfire II 3-9 (Demo Unit) from Cameraland for around $130 shipped... thats only 20 bucks more than you planned to spend.

Good luck!
