I have a Ruger Single Seven. My bullet is a 100 grain Hornady XTP. I wish to use Winchester 231. I would like the velocity to be about 1200 FPS. Any suggestions? Also would a standard small pistol primer be adequate o should I go to a small pistol primer?

Hodgdon online data does not have W-231 data for the 100 Gr XTP, but does have it for W-244. I could make it form there if it were me.

They do have some W-231 data for a 115 Gr LRNFP, which I assume is lead round nose flat point. A little help there.

It also has W-231 data for a 90 Gr jacketed bullet. That should be very helpful coupled with the W-244 100 Gr XTP data.

Looks like you should be able to get 1200 FPS with a 100 Gr XTP safely with W-231.

A mag primer is not needed with W-231, if that is what you meant to type.

Buy powder to match the data, when necessary, taking no unnecessary chances with extrapolation.

From the Hornady manual 10th edition page 858-859:

327 Federal Magnum
100 gr XTP, 1.450" OAL.
start load w/ 231 = 5.3 gr. for 1200 fps.
Max load w/ 231 = 5.8 gr for 1250 fps.
Starline brass, Primer federal 205. tested in Ruger GP 100, 4.2" barrel.

Why did you choose W231? When looking for higher velocities you usually need a slower powder, W231/HP-38 might not be able to deliver that. In the Hodgdon site they list a 100gr XTP bullet with HP-38 but the max charge only generated 1251 fps from a 5" barrel. They don't say what kind of barrel. You might want to choose a different and slower powder. If not you can always work up to the max charge of W231/HP-38 and see if you can achieve the velocity you are aiming for with acceptable accuracy.

I would also test ammo with standard and magnum primers. It might effect accuracy so it's worth a try.

Good luck, keep us posted.

I have about 5 pounds of 231 on hand I have used H110 with good results for a factory equivalent load. 1200 FPS seems a good load to hike with and target shoot with. Will load this weekend and post accuracy results.

Hey, having 5 lbs available is a good reason to want to use it. Give it a try and see if you can get what you want with it.

Case in point that, if using Hornady bullets, one should own a recent Hornady manual. The 9th edition shows the same thing.

Curiously, Hornady shows AA#7 for 32 H&R and AA #5 and #9 for 327 Federal Magnum, when AA#7 is a great powder for moderate magnums loads. I was looking for a range that was somewhere between H&R and Federal Magnum and did not find but W231 and HS-6. The HS-6 showed it to be the better performer to really call it a magnum. I think one could use it in the midrange to achieve a good subsonic load but using magnum primers to support HS-6's debris problems.

Fired 14 rounds at about 10 yards in my backyard range All were center with two dead center. firing free hand, Data was 5.4 grains 231,magnum primer and Hornady 100 grain XTP.no pressure signs. Recoil minimum Very pleased
