I am having a mutt rifle built in a .338 ultra cal. I have a"christonsn arms"carbon fbr brl.The barrel is set for a rem.700 action. Am I stuck with having to find a rem.700 .338 action Lt hnd.. Or can some actions be altered to fit a rem700 barrel? I have to find the parts for the build So im looking at every angle, that will not be a easy find wthout $$ a cmplte .338 rfl..

It's not real possible to "alter an action" to fit a Remington barrel.

It either has Remington 700 threads, or it doesn't.

Many custom action makers do use the Remington thread standard, but you can probably buy two or three used 700's for what one custom action costs.

With only 1 post I really can't get a feel for your baseline level of expertise, however...

Are you asking if you need an actual Remmy 338 RUM donor rifle to get your action?

If so, the answer is no. You just need an action long enough with a magnum bolt face (.532?). Some calibers similar in length that leap to mind are 7mm STW, 300 RUM, and 8mm Rem Mag.

Although if you cannibalize an 8mm for this you have some bad karma headed your way in the future.

Hopefully, I haven't made any material errors in this post... if so maybe RC or someone will stop back in and correct them.

i THINK your ok with any long 700 action, A magnum bolt face would help but a standard could be opened.
No mater what you use, unless it was chambered for the ultramags to begin with, will need to have its feed lips worked over, and probably a new magazine box installed.
