Hello Everyone,

Has anyone tried using the .338 Remington Ultra Magnum as a more cost efficient substitute to the .338 Lapua for long range shooting?

General thoughts?

I have thought about it. It gives up some velocity and energy at the far, far ranges... but otherwise it IS much more affordable, or at least seems to be. It's an interesting idea. I'd like to hear more on this myself, especially from people who have shot both.

I was just looking for information on the exact same subject. From what I've read so far the Ultra is much less to reload (if you include the price of brass) and gives you slightly more bang for your buck. And according to what I've seen so far is almost exactly on par in the long range accuracy. Check out Sniper Country for the write ups.

I don't know...I was chatting with a buddy of mine about this very topic and it all depends on quality of brass. Brass aside, it's about equal cost to reload them.

More or less: yes.

But any time you are burning 85+ grains of powder and $0.40+ cent bullets, cost efficiency is kind of a secondary concern.

There are a number of smaller calibers which can do well at long range, not giving up much to the big 338's until you get WAY out there.
