I know for reloaders you can use .357/.38 bullets in a .35 Whelen case for target practice, varmints, etc. 'Low end shooting.

Are there any other rifle/pistol bullet combinations like this? Anything in the .40 or bigger range that shares the same similarities for reloading down?

The use of bullets designed for the .44mag in the .444 rifle is a good example of a factory load using your idea.
You can load .45 pistol bullets in the 45-70, .458 Mag, .460 Weatherby etc.
Some .45 pistol bullets are .457 diameter and will be .001 under standard bore diameter for .45 cal rifles (old 45-70s can measure as large as .460, if not larger) but that doesn't really hurt anything.
I like using cast bullets for loading lightweights in rifles.

Lets not confuse Bullets with Cartridges.

You can't shoot .357 Magnum Cartridges in a .35 Whelen, any more then you can shoot .44 Mag Cartridges in a 45-70, .458 Mag, .460 Weatherby.
Or .45 ACP in any of them either.

What you can do is reload them using the same dia Pistol Bullets in the parent Rifle Cartridge.

The point RevGeo alluded to is slightly misleading.

Almost all store bought .45 pistol bullets are .451", .452", or .454".

Almost all the large .45 cal rifles have .458" bores.

As far as modern cartridges go .45acp, .45colt, .454 casull, .460 S&w are all .452. Your rifles like .45-70, .458 socomm, .458 lott etc. are all .458. The big difference between .450 bushmaster and .458 socomm is whether you want to use pistol bullets or rifle bullets. .450 bushmaster is .452. You can probably load .452's in a .458 and get o.k. accuracy, but if using lead I would imagine it would foul horribly.

edit: dang I should have known RC would beat me.

Right, I understand the difference. Reloading only.

So what it the diameter relationship between .35 Whelen and .357 pistol bullets?

What kind of accuracy could you expect firing a .45ACP bullet out of a .45/70 cartridge and gun?

.500 Linebaugh and .50 Alaskan/.50-110/.50 BMG

.50 GI/.50 Action Express/.500 S&W and .50 Beowulf.

.41 magnum and .405 Winchester ought to work okay, but who has a .405 Win?
