350 Legend

On the contrary, this Chuck Hawk's article was indeed edifying. The 30-30 is constantly poo-poohed as "100 yard lightweight", yet by any measure except bullet diameter, the 350 Legend is outclassed by it. The "Legend" is 85% snake oil and chicanery and 15% compliance with the bizarre regulations of a few jurisdictions. If you live in such a jurisdiction and you want to hunt with an AR and you don't think that that the 450 BM is for you, and you are willing to bet that this incredibly niche cartridge that really isn't much better than the 357 Mag will survive the test of time, then this is indeed the cartridge for you.

Funny, everyone else including Winchester is saying you can't convert .223 brass. Do you have a link to the information on how to do it?

You can't convert 223/556 brass to 350 Legend, but someguy2800 is saying you should buy a 357 AR Max since you can convert 223/556 brass to 357 AR Max. 357 AR Max should have very similar performance to 350 Legend.

Starline is even selling 223/556 brass that does not have the neck formed. They are straight wall cases, left long and you can trim them to your desired length for a number of wildcats including 357 AR Max.

As MCB noted I was refering too 357 AR Max, which is a different cartridge that uses 223 as a parent case. The issue is 223 brass is tapered so you either need a mandrel to flare out the entire body of the case, or you have to fire form it. Its not as simple as just forming and trimming like with 300 BO.

If you want to hit the easy button you can get starline 223 basic brass which is straight walled and only needs to be trimmed. At that point your back to proprietary brass and mags still, so the benefit over 350 legend starts to dissolve.

Personally if I was interested in one of the two for hunting I would get a 350 legend barrel and 500 rounds of brass when it becomes available, and I would have a lifetime supply for hunting. I might just get one for suppressed usage.

Same thing, its been difficult to get regular 357 max for the past several years. I wanted one several years ago but when I looked brass was out of stock everywhere. When I checked again 3 years ago brass was being made again so I bought a contender 357 max barrel and 300 rounds of new brass at the same time. I don't care if they ever make it again, I have enough for what I'll ever use.

I think this might be Winchester’s third try at this. It’s awfully similar to the 35 WSL, 351 WSL, and now we have the 350 Legend; each time adding a little more oomph, and in the case of the legend, adding .006 to the bullet diameter. Each was a pretty nice cartridge in its own right, but neither was the deer slayer it was advertised to be. I haven’t shot the Legend yet, but I’m hoping it will be at least adequate for deer sized game. One might be better off to get the time tested 38-55.

I've never found anything useful from Chuck Hawks and this particular article looks to be him rushing to the front to critique this new offering in an effort to let us know how smart he is.

I will say that there is a wide gap in performance of straight wall rifle cartridges in smaller bore sizes than the .450BM. Maybe a .375 would be a good idea??? I'm just glad I don't live in one of those states and get along just fine with leverguns. :)

I think of the 350 L as a 357 Max +

I have taken several deer with a Rossi 92 16in h barreled 357mag , with 158gr Golddots ..
I can certainly see the 350L in a small light 16in barreled boltgun .. loaded with 158 to 180 gr XTP or Golddot bullet ..
It would be a great combo for Whitetail & hawg hunting ..
I really don't git into studing charts and stuff .. I know that a 357 mag in a carbine will drop a deer .. I really didn't let the Rossi read up on its ballistics
