357 Rem 158gr SWC in J-Frame?

Why would you do that?

A really good 38+P expanding load will be BETTER for defensive purposes, and surely you wouldn't want to do much practicing with a heavyweight slug in a J-Frame?

Jim,

I bought them for hunting using a different gun. So, I was just wondering what they would be like out of a J-Frame. Are they going to kick more or less than a Speer 125gr 357 Gold Dot?

I carry Buffalo Bore's 158-gr LHC .357 mag in my 3" 60 when I'm hiking. (Their site says it's good for c. 1398 fps out of that barrel, and folks online back them up).

It kicks pretty good, but it's not as bad as 210-grain .41 mags out of my old Taurus 415 Ti.

The 158-gr Buffalo Bores kick a whole lot more than Rem 125-gr SJHPS or Fed HS 130-gr Personal Defense loads in the same gun, so I'm sure it would kick more than the Gold Dots.

I carry 158-gr LSWCHP .38+Ps for "social work," though. I'd rather have the faster follow-up shots, it penetrates adequately, and this way I only have to carry one type of ammo (since I carry a Colt Agent in conjunction with the J-frame Smith).

I found that the Model 60-15 shoots most accurately with .38 +Ps, even discounting the flinch-flyers I threw in with the .357s. It does well enough with the .357s that I'm happy to use them as a trail load - that 3" Model 60 is one dandy little gun! :)

Depends on who loaded the Gold Dot; or rather, how hot they loaded it. The Remington SWC is a full-power 357; velocity from your snub would prolly be around 1050 or 1100 fps x 158 grs. = Power factor of around 174. The 125 Gold Dots are sometimes loaded a bit slower than the full-on standard 125 357 load (as in Proload's Tactical Lite). There, you would probably be pushing the 125 at maybe 1150 for a PF of 144 or so. So the Remington would be a bit stiffer; though recoil is somewhat subjective, and some folks find that a bigger bullet's relative lack of flash/bang reduces the perceived recoil somewhat.

OTOH, Jim's right about the limited use of the SWC. I mean, it's a great load if you've got to shoot a Rotweiler with your snub, but for most bipedal targets, it's gonna just poke through like a not knitting needle.

All other things being equal, probably a skosh more. That saidâ„¢, my pre-agreement model 60 proved much easier to shoot with full house loads than I expected, especially after I had the barrel ported. It's not a gun to shoot all afternoon, but by no means painful.
