38/357 question (possible can of worms)

I've posted this experience before but I'll post it again. The story makes me look very foolish but I think there is educational value in it:

I once had a negligent discharge with a .357 magnum, indoors. The round was 158 grain Hydra-shok, fired from a 4-inch k-frame. The gun was about 2 feet from my face, with the muzzle pointing to my left; it was close enough that my face got sprayed by the cylinder gap.

This happened in a very dim room but I don't remember seeing any muzzle flash. The report was UNREAL and I immediately experienced high pitched ringing in my ears. However I could still hear people moving around in the hall and muffled voices from adjacent rooms. The ringing faded to a background hum within the hour but it was about 5 days before the faint ringing went away completely.

Anyway, I was not in any way "incapacitated" from the blast, although it is certainly not an experience I'd like to repeat.

How do you have a negligent discharge with a revolver? An old SAA will go off if you drop it because it doesn't have a transfer bar, but a modern revolver won't. That's the only way I know of to have a 'negligent discharge'.

To me, a negligent discharge means the gun went off when it was not intended. Not that difficult to achieve.
You were right loneviking, it's a can of worms. I see small difference in risk to others between 357 and 38. Insignificant compared to a whole lot of other factors. Type of bullet and how much working gray matter you have between your ears is going to have a much bigger impact.

Hi Viking. Can we say it was a dumbass move on my part and leave it at that? I have learned a lot since then and I hate thinking about it now.

Noir,

Not asking but am appreciative that you are willing to use an embarassing act to prove a point.

Most of us would not admit it doing something "dumbass". Of course we all have.
