A few years back I came into 2-3k 38-40 180gr wax lubed bullets. I don't have a 38-40 but I have a few .40's and 10mm's

These are marked as being 18 brinnel and are sized at .401"

For the heck of it I have loaded up a few in hopes to run them through my carbine. 10mm has a OAL of 1.260 and a minimum of 1.250 from what I can find. These engage the Rifling at the 1.260 and 1.255" length and jam it up a tad when chambering.

Think any shorter than 1.250 is safe? Or do you think I should just cut my losses and put them all in my melting pot and make them into something else?

Just seat them to the depth you need for the proper OAL for the 10mm. As long as you're using loading data for 180 gr. cast bullets, you'll be fine. Of course, you'll work up your load, but I shoot bullets I cast for .38-40 in my 10mm handguns and carbine all the time.

Hope this helps.

Fred

At one time I had read that the 10mm was originally developed using .38-40 bullets.

Set your OAL so as to not jam into the rifling. Start at the starting load and work your way up. You will be just fine.
