You're describing the caliber- .38 Special Cartridge.

It's a Smith & Wesson M&P series, either a Model 10 or (if made between WWII and 1957), a pre-Model 10.

Open the cylinder, look at the exposed FRAME under the barrel. If after 1957 it'll have a Model 10 derivative stamping there.

The C prefix (C1-C999,999) was used from 1948 to 1967. The closest it would be possible to date your gun would that it was likely in the first fifth of that time frame, or around 1951. Since S&W did not begin to use model numbers until 1957, that gun probably does not have one.

The S&W Military and Police revolver (later called the Model 10) is one of the best and also one of the most common revolvers in the world. It has been in continual production since 1899, and has been used by police forces in many countries. Over a million were made during World War II for the U.S. and its allies. It is a simple, easy to use, accurate, and highly reliable handgun. I am sorry to hear about your buddy, but you have a wonderful gun to remember him by.

DPR is it does not have any other markings besides what is described. And Jim k I knew it was older but did not have any idea it was that old

Just the hammer would put it pretty much in the early 1950s.
