Just thinking guns this afternoon and found myself wondering if anyone ever manufactured a 38sp autolader. I believe AMT made a 38 super at one time, but not a 38sp.
Thanks,
JimK

Hello, That would be interesting to see, If there ever was a 38 special Autoload.

I think, however that the case geometry of a 38 special would make it difficult to create a autoloading pistol.

S&W Model 52 Master.

Colt 1911 mid-range match conversions by custom gunsmiths.

Colt also offered a 1911 .38 Spl "Kit Gun" conversion package in the 1960's in .38 Special or .38 AMU. (Rimless .38 Special developed by the Army Advanced Marksmanship Unit at Ft. Benning.)

Both were designed for 148 grain wad-cutter match ammo.

They would not function with full length RN or SWC bullets.

They were quite common in NRA Bullseye competition years ago.

I made the mistake of shooting a Smith 52. It was made for .38 wadcutters only. Mistake? Yeah- now I dream of having one. What a fantastic target pistol! Now they make a 9mm model 952. Sorry, S&W- not even close.

Both Colt and S&W made target pistols to shoot .38 spl with flush seated wad cutter ammo only. The .38 spl chambering was offered in the 1911 Gold Cup Colt and the Model 52 S&W.

Coonan made a .357 Magnum autopistol. If you wanted to shoot .38 Special, they would sell you a softer recoil spring and magazine with spacer to handle the shorter round.

It was a trick when I shot my friends model 52 and realized the thing was single action only as I engaged the safety and it did not decock.

S&W Model 52 in will to me

An Army buddy (Vietnam) has a model 52 that he has willed to me. Though he is younger, he states he will die before me. His Dillon press is also in his will to me. Gotta stay healthy!

Don't forget the .38 AMU cartridge conversion for 1911's. But, I guess technically it wasn't a 38 Special, even though that was the starting point.

38 Special autoloader

Not as a put down, but it seems many do not hand load or read balistic tables. First if you check out the numbers on the 9mm, it is little more than an autoloading 38 special.

The Colt Mid range has become somewhat of a collectors piece, so if you must go with a 38 special autoloader the S&W M52 is about the only choice.

As a bulleye shooter, I can tell you learning to shoot 3 guns is more difficult to learn to shoot than 2 guns. So about 20 years ago almost all bullseye shooters hung up the .38 special in favor of firing the .45 auto in the centerfire match.

At one time my carry gun was a 9mm Star "Starlite". I put together a handload with a cast 148 gr. cone point over 5.0 grains Unique that would clock out at 1050 fps. The load was a tack driver.

The S&W Model 52 was invented by S&W's Chief Designer at the time, Joe Norman, who also designed the Model 39 and Model 59 pistols. I had the pleasure of working with him for two days in the late 1970's, when S&W called him back out of retirement to help fix a glitch with the Model 59's. He was quite knowledgable and it was an honor to spend that time with him.

Hope this helps.

Fred
