4" Colt Trooper Mk III

Looking at a 4" Colt Trooper Mk III, but it has an issue. When pulling the trigger in DA, the trigger will not fully pull and the hammer will not fully cock every 5 to 10 pulls. This does not happen in SA Mode.

Any ideas what this could be? How easy is it to fix, or how costly?

It could be it is just dry of lube & very dirty.
Thats a cheap fix.

Or it could be worn & out of time.
That will not be a cheap fix.

No way to say for sure from this great distance.

Hmmm.. I was afraid of that. The shop is calling Colt in the morning. I know the guys there and they said that if they can send it in and have Colt take care of it, then depending on the costs, it's either sticker price or split the costs.

Given the sticker price, I'll let them call.

I am betting the action is just gummed up with old oil...been there, done that with a MKiii.

Colt is no longer accepting Mark III revolvers for repair or service. Parts inventory is expended and none are being made, I was told by Colt earlier this year. The Mark III series are the easiest to work on of all the Colt DA's. Most parts are drop in and even the hand is easily fitted, that is if you can lay your hands on the parts needed.

I worked on a Colt Trooper Mark III a couple of years ago. On a double action trigger pull, the cylinder would rotate sometimes, sometimes it would not. It turned out that the trigger has an "eye" that fits over a pin in the frame. I use the word "eye" because I don't know what to call it. This eye was broken above the pin that it pivoted on. I ordered a new one from Jack First gun parts, I believe they were from South Dakota. They make replacement parts for these and other guns. I broke the first one during installation, and they sent me a new one. It did need minor stoning to make it function properly. I'm nowhere near a gunsmith, and I made it work. Good luck.

I bought one of those once for a price that was so low I couldn't turn it down.

Trouble was the trigger wasn't working right and the cylinder was free spinning.

Turned out that a previous owner (or somebody) had taken it apart, and put the trigger spring in backwards (!)

Turned the spring around, and the revolver worked fine.

Yahoo or Google search: Numrich Gun Parts and you should be able to find some parts. They were the ones that bought Colt's supply.

**update**

OK, so after going back and forth with the shop about this, I was finally able to talk to their in-house "gunsmith". He has taken it apart and cleaned it, and his determination is that the hand is getting bound up.

I suspect this is a timing issue and have decided to pass.
