So I have a ton, I mean a ton of .40 ammo so I ordered a KKM 6 inch 40 barrel for my G40 MOS. I see Underwood makes a wicked coated 200 grain 40 round. Deer in my little neck of northern Virginia rarely pass 180 pounds, usually smaller. Keeping to archery distance, any first hand experience out there? I’ve shot a hundred rounds of 190 grain federal 10mm jhp out of the G40 and can’t believe how soft is shoots. I have a 1066 from my first PD and as heavy as it is, it still snaps with this round.

You didn't need to spend the money on another barrel. I've shot enough 40 S&W ammo through my G20 And G29 to feel comfortable doing it with the 10mm barrel. Accuracy and POI are the same. That said, I don't have a ton of 40 ammo. Until things got crazy and no ammo is available I could get 10mm just as easily as 40 and at the same price. Cheaper than 45.

I had no real reason to shoot a lot of 40's though it but have done it enough to know it works if needed.

Thanks! I read a ton of threads about the issue and know what I don’t know, so it didn’t break the bank to buy the barrel, reasonable minds have different opinions. I didn’t look for 10mm until I read an article about the G40 and realized while I’ve been longing to handgun hunt for a very long time, I didn’t need to buy the Ruger Redhawk 454 to do it. I’m looking forward to having this thing ready for next November or for a hog hunt if I can do that sooner.

You're lucky. On the other side of the Potomac you can't hunt deer with a handgun that delivers less than 700 ft.lbs. VA is half that energy requirement and the .40 S&W is well above 350 ft.lbs. in a great many loadings.

In close range and a good hit, you will be fine. Shot on with a carbine in 40 many years ago at 30 yards. Did good damage to the boil maker. I would not worry about a handgun if you make the shot. We are allowed to use 22 mag for deer, so 40 will be fine.

I’ve only shot deer with a 155gr HP from a .40.
Winchester 155gr SilverTip, and an equivalent load with WSF and a Hornady 155gr XTP.
Both were heart/lung shots. Both ran 50yds and collapsed. Bullets completely penetrated.
Shot placement x3.

If you can hit a coke can at 30 yards 10 out of 10 times then you are good. But if you have other choices why risk injuring an animal? Just because one can doesn't mean one should. Might be a long hard track. Or you could get lucky. Heard tales from my fil about hunting (poaching) with a 22 mag. He grew up dirt poor.

I have shot .40 in my G20, 29 & 40. No issues and feel safe doing so in stock barrels. Definitely less recoil, similar impact to 25yds
