I have a soft spot for these old DA Colts . Both 38LC and 41LC . True classics ! :)

Where does one get ANY ammo? I don't know of a source for any quantity at a reasonable price. Someone once wrote (I think on this site) that .41 Magnum cases can be trimmed, but that is not true as the .41 Magnum case is .03" too large in diameter for the .41 Colt chamber.

That was a very popular round in the late 1800's and early 1900's. I think it was the third most common round in the SAA Colt, after .45 Colt and .44-40, and it was used in many other Colt models like the one pictured. In fact for many years that Colt frame was called the ".41 frame."

Thanks, Maddock.

I have a Model 1877 that I would like to fire some. My dealer has some of Buffalo's other ammo, so he should be able to get the .41 Colt. The price is not out of line for limited production ammo.

I doubt it is what Preacherman would call "effective ammo", but I don't think that old "Thunderer" would stand up to anything with much power.

Jim, I think you know this, but I want to be sure.

The Colt model 1877 "Thunderer" should only be used with black powder. Although they were made up until about 1908 they were never warrented to use smokeless powder. If you have a model 1888 New Navy or later there shouldn't be any problem.

Here's a fairly early 'lightning' .38lc. Model of 1877, born in 1884, which is when great grandad joined the Kansas City police; it was his piece until he retired many years later.

Brass is easy...

Starline makes .41 Long Colt brass.
Midway sells if for;
$46.55/100
$198.95/500
$375.79/1000

Finding suitable bullets is a bit more difficult as there isn't much of a selection available.
There seems to be a variation in bore diameters. It's definately a good idea to slug your barel so you know just what diameter you're dealing with.
