.41 Mag Association

"At 65 I know what your vision is like... Up till 2014 mine was perfect...then got cataracts in both eyes... Now I can't use handgun or scout scopes any more because it is out of focus..."
RJM, Have you considered cataract surgery? I'm 69 and had it in Dec. I wore tri-focals before, now i only need glasses for reading the fine print.

Yes thank you... I have had many friends who have had it done and I think all have been successful... So it is under consideration....

There are a lot of reduced .41 mag loads that perform at lower velocities and reduced recoil without using .41 special brass in the .41 mag cylinder. Just my $.02 FWIW.

That was kind of my thought, and the reason for the question. I know Starline (I think) offers .41SPC brass, at a ridiculous cost, and make about as much sense, to me at least, as buying .38SPC brass to shoot in a .357.

Charlie...While Starline .41 Special brass is only 0.014 cents more per case more than their .41 Magnum, I agree with you that if you don't have a dedicated .41 Special or making VERY low velocity .41 loads it is a waste of time buying it. That said, one other area it works well in is short cylinder .41 Magnum like the Freedom Arms 97 and Taurus Trackers. I have a dedicated Single Action Army in .41 Special and three Taurus Trackers and the Special brass works great...

Joe...For your 58 may I recommend 8.0 grains of Unique with any cast, jacketed or plated 200 to 230 grain bullet. This will duplicate the original Remington and Winchester POLICE LOAD that ran a soft swaged 210 grain SWC bullet at 950 +- fps. 9.0 grains run 1100 and 10.0 1180+- depending on the bullet used from a 4" barrel.. Favorite bullets are the Berry's Mfg. plated 210 and the 210-230 Keith. If you cast your own, the Accurate Molds 215V has a .37 meplate and is very accurate. Also get a Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Die...puts a perfect crimp on as well as making sure there is good contact between the case and the bullet shank.

Since you like 58s....

If you are looking for a holster try the DeSantis Speed Scabbard... Can be had on eBay and Amazon for under $50....

Charlie...While Starline .41 Special brass is only 0.014 cents more per case more than their .41 Magnum,

When it was first released, it was a LOT more than that... something in the neighborhood of $1.50/piece if memory serves. I thought it was kind of bizarre. Nice to see the price has come back down.

The 9.0grn Unique load has been my standard .41 load for many, many years. I pretty much use any commercial cast 215grn bullet, but I have a stash of Montana Bullet's H&G Keith 215's I'm going to play with when I have the chance.

That is odd as I bought 2K pieces when they came out and it was the same price as it is now...

Back 10 years ago or so a poster named Dixie made a custom order of 55K which was Starlines minimum for a custom order. I bought 12K from him, bagged it into 100 piece lots and sold it for $0.30 cents each on GunBroker and at gun shows...was all gone in a year.

Went to Wanenmachers show this weekend. Among the things I found was a set of old Herrett grips for the 3-screw 41. Three-screw 41Mag w Herrets.JPG s gr

There's a lot more to hold on to now. My hands are between large and x-large, but my fingers are not real long. These should help me shoot this thing.

At least my pinky has somewhere to go now, instead of flapping around in the breeze.

Missed out on a 7.5" 41Mag Redhawk. Very nice, hardly used. Had a Weaver 2x, mounts, box, papers. He asked $800, and was willing to talk. I walked away to think about it, someone else got it.

Bob, thanks for the link to GT Bullets. They have a 240 grain, .411" I've been looking for. The throats on all my other Blackhawks are large for caliber but my 1967-made .41 3-screw is on the money. We'll see how they shoot.

These plain-base slugs have no chamfer or bevel which I am glad for. I had tried some .410" pb but that were beveled and saw some leading (not bad, and I realize there may be several other causes for the occurrence).

Hooda...a set of those Herrett's grips came on a Ruger NM I bought back about 1990... These don't have the thumb rest on the left panel however...

Apples... U R welcome... I think the guys got great prices for the quality of his product...

My new to me Smith and Wesson Model 58. It came with Hogue rubber grips. Since it has a target trigger and a target hammer, I put Target grips on it. Except for some holster wear at the muzzle and the turn line, it is in excellent condition. Whoever had it before me, took very good care of it. The serial number is N272837 IMG_0470 - Copy.JPG IMG_0472 - Copy.JPG

Interesting it came with a target hammer and trigger... I didn't think the 58's came with those.

QUESTION:

I wish to try a heavy-for-.41 lead semiwadcutter in my 4-5/8" Ruger 3-screw. Where would I start with Unique to get a .411" 240-grain slug to 1000 fps? Not interested in 1200 fps with this one. There's not much in the published books for this combination. Looks like it's time to start setting some $ aside for a chrony and my own copy of QuickLoad.

Thank you in advance.

Back in the day I started with 8.0 gr and worked up to 10.0.

That's probably spot on. I get 1100fps with 9.0grn Unique and a 215grn cast out of my 6" Dan Wesson, and 1020fps out of my 4" Smith; for safety sake I would start at 8.0grn with the 240's and work your way out.
