.41 Mag Association

Now I'm interested in the 41 mag Pug.
I guess that 243 rifle I've always wanted will have to wait, again...
But then again, with the price of cigarettes so high now, and with me quitting years ago and my wife still smoking, I can buy a couple of guns a year with "my cigarette money". :)

Call me a wuss, I have no desire to fire any .41 mags in a smaller gun than that old S&W. Recoil is cumulative. Just sayin.

TBH, I'm right there with you. I don't even shoot full-house stuff in my 4" Smiths, saving those for my heavier 6" Dan Wesson... or the 1894. There have been quite a few lighter and/or shorter .41 Magnum pistols released... the Lew Horton 3" round butts, those Pugs, and I think Smith or Taurus released an alloy frame .41... but I don't really want anything to do with them, thank you very much. Not that they don't check a box or two for others, just not me.

Just found this thread, love it. Maybe in the winter when I get some slower weeks at work and I'm bored, I'll read through it.

My only .41 is a Ruger BH 6.5". It is my favorite wheelgun, but I do feel the lack of support for this fine caliber. I cannot buy ANY bullets or brass locally for loading it. Often the internet is out of the Nosler 210s I prefer for full-house loads. Still working on a cast bullet I like so I can order in quantity. Berrys did alright for me but without a crimping groove I can't run them very fast. Tried MB coated, and the coating rubs off the driving band in my dies leading to lead buildup. I've cured this by waxing the bullets after loading, but this is a pain. Couple others I tried were great for low speed plinking loads but not hard enough to run hot for silhouette. As such I've been concentrating on .357 which is available everywhere and options are legion.

Wish more firearms, ammunition and component makers would give this fine round a second go.

I do pretty well with Xtreme 215 SWC. If you want to push lead hard, then try IMR 4227. Faster powders cook the lead too much, and it will show in the bore. Gas checks are always an option but if interested in the real deal then Hornady XTP is usually there to help. When we choose to shoot 41, I don't think it is logical to be too particular about commercial bullets. I am not aware of any problems with XTPs and just start there, always finding what I want.

I too have a 6.5 NMBH Flat Top and can attest to 41 Magnum making a difference, since I also have a 44 Magnum in the same gun and feel it needs a Bisley grip instead of that smaller Flat Top grip, which works okay with 41..

I 'discovered' IMR4227 in the .41 last year... I had bought 2# of it during the Great Shortage just to have something. I decided to get rid of it and just loaded it all up in a generic .41 load with a 215grn commercial cast bullet. In WY last year, I got this load out to 600yds in my 1894, and 500yds with my 4" Smith... and, yes, I'm talking 6 of 6 using front sight holdover.

I agree, Random... if you can't find the Nosler, try a box of the XTP's, they work well in anything I shoot them in.

If you are looking for a good cast bullet, try Montana Bullet Works... they have a number of cast bullet weights in .41, with or without gas checks. Cast Performance makes a good bullet, too, I'm a big fan of their 250grn GC bullet over W296 in my Marlin.

You can run the Berry's plated bullets as fast as you would like... To crimp them just get a Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Die. I crimp my loads with the Berry's so it makes a ring right around the bullet...I have recovered bullets and the crimp never compromises the plating...

GT Bullets has a real good selection of bullets and their prices are excellent...

I too have put a pretty good roll crimp on Berrys bullets. Its dented the plating, but not cut thru. Accuracy is as good as I can shoot.

Well my bullets from Penn finally arrived. 215 gr TCFP, with a very small metplat, almost a rn. They look very nice, and according to the Gentleman from Penn, they should be good to 1600 or so depending on my barrel. Running them through a Ruger BH 6.5, purpose will be Big Bore silhouette. I have H110, IMR 4227 and HS-6. Wondering what folks have run with a similar hardcast bullet?

For high velocity loads...H110.

With that bullet, 22-23 grains should put the top of the powder charge at the base of the bullet. I've found that with H110 with zero air space has the highest velocity, lowest standard deviation and best accuracy....

My .41 is a Ruger NMBH, 4 5/8" barrel, all stock. My favored load is 9.2 grains Unique and a Lee 207 grain SWC, or Extreme 210 grain FP. The cast shoots a little better, but the copper plated Extreme is sure easier to clean up after. I am not a very good handgun shot, so the slight difference in accuracy between the two bullets may mostly dwell in my imagination.

Just got done shooting some of the 180 grain zinc bullets with 8.0 grains of Unique from a 2.75" Ruger Redhawk and a 3" S&W 657...zero issues and very accurate...perfect practice load as I usually shoot lighter bullets in both these guns... For 7 cents each they are hard to beat...

Domino...you have a Range Report on that PUG yet???

Only shot it once, grouped ok, just a bit right with a 220 gn swc and 8.0 Unique.. I've somehow acquired 4 other guns since I got it, and my back went out twice so I haven't really wrung it out yet.

I bought one recently from Bud's, but haven't shot it yet. My Dad's been very sick, among other things, and I haven't found time go to the range. Paid three hundred and eighty something. I like the gun, but of course, it isn't as finely finished as a Smith 57 or a Blackhawk. It does cycle smoothly and seems solid. I'm guessing it's the lowest priced .41 Magnum on the market. Here's mine:

I'd say the Winchester 41mag 175gr Silvertip would be a great SD option in the Charter ...

I have just loaded and test fired a Trailboss load for my 41 NM Blackhawk Flat Top, thinking that I could use that gun and the equivalent charge in 44 Mag as an option for Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS). I am an elder and not very competitive except to do better on my own, so I can have my fun with different guns and leather than the serious gamers use. Firing that 41 Mag with a cowboy load was good for a chuckle, when preceded by some stout 41 Specials in a GP100. It was like a target or practice load, so if it is "soft shooting" you are looking for, this is something to try. I was running 215 gr Xtreme LSWC in 41 Mag brass.

I recently found this forum and think it is great, after reading some of the entries I have put a Charter Arms 41 Mag Pug on order thru my LGS. I have been shooting 41 mag since the early 90's when I traded a Glock 21 for a Ruger Redhawk 5.5" with Hogue grips and have never looked back. I have added a few since then, a Ruger Redhawk 7.5', a 15" MGM barrel for my Encore pistol and recently a Freedom Arms Model 83 6". Thank you to everyone on this forum as it keeps the caliber alive

That gun is likely to make a better 41 Special than magnum, so a tip that Starline makes brass for it, and trustworthy load data is available. You can use plated bullets where you might not in magnum.

Thank you, I will to the Starline webset and look, does anyone have some loads for a 41 Special Load?

I just went to the Starline website, ordered 500 pieces of brass and found they have a really great article for reloading the 41 Special: https://www.starlinebrass.com/articles/Reloading-for-41-Caliber-Handguns-41-Mag-and-41-Special/
It does mention a limited amount of lighter weight bullets, but I have invested heavily into swaging equipment for the 41 so this will not be an issue. Thank you RealGun for you advicew
