.41 Mag Association

You're right Charlie. The grips do have character. I will probably leave them alone, at least for now. And the trigger is very smooth. DA is sweet and SA is incredible. I haven't had a DA revolver in 30 years and this is my first S&W. I'm loving the .41 magnum.

It's a new year (nearly), in a new house, with a new sixgun chambered in a new cartridge.

Crappy cell phone pic of my entry, dirty after it's inaugural shooting. Also the first shots fired on the new property. This has been a long time coming. Always wanted a .41 but never came together with one. Came real close several years ago with an early fluted Bisley but it had scratches all over the frame where some dummy tried to push the trigger pin out without first depressing the gate spring. It was otherwise minty, still wish I'd bought it. Anyway, these showed up at CDNN and after having one in my cart for a month, I pulled the trigger. It's now wearing the XR3 and maple burl grips from my 50th anniversary .44 Blackhawk but will probably end up with a Hunter or Bisley grip.

Now converted to a Bisley. Gonna need professional help because the timing isn't just right.

I bought a take-off set and slapped it together. It's an older vintage Bisley set on a new production Blackhawk, so fitment is always going to be off. If it proves to be a shooter, I'll have Jack Huntington do a proper conversion, put some fancy walnut on it, install a new front sight and refinish the whole thing.

Just a little more on the 41. I picked a new blued version up in 4 5/8" for a super price as a project gun for Andy Horvath. I still want to shoot magnums out of it so didn't go with a medium frame. Also ordered some 265 grain pills from Montanabulletworks with gas checks. Loaded some up with 19.7 gr. Of 110. Thats just a hair over starting load and am suppose to get near 1400fps. Fired a few rounds from each of my Rugers and a few from my Smith. Thats a pretty stout load. Flattens the primer a little, but will wake you right up. I'll fire some over a chronograph when it dries up a bit. Until then, keep your powder dry.

In order to enjoy a 41 there is no need to go radical on powder charge or bullet weight. I have a cowboy load with 215 gr lead and Trailboss in case I would use the gun as a SASS backup or loaner. I also have an H110 load with 230 gr gas checks and another for XTPs, mild to wild as they say. I also have a 41 Special carry gun for which A2400 serves well, but lacking a dedicated gun, that brass is available and can be used in the 41 Magnums.

One of my favorites is Cast Performance 250grn FN, it’s a bit of a handful in the 4”, but is fantastic in the Dan Wesson 6”, and in the 20” 1894. I have chrono data if’n you are interested.

Well obviously there are a lot of recipes for the .41 - from "mild to wild" as RealGun so aptly put it. This Blackhawk is the first wheelgun, the first magnum and the first .41 that I have owned personally. I have shot .357's, .41's and 44's even the S&W .500 (don't care to shoot that one for very long). My personal preference is for the .45 ACP of which I have several pistols. This is going to be interesting shooting a magnum wheelgun and a single action at that!

One of the things I've done is get a set of Pachmayr grips for my Smiths... when I go shooting, they get put on, once the pistols come back home, they get the appropriate wood put back on. I have the 'Decelerators' which have a covered backstrap... they make shooting a lot less painful. I shot my model 58 with the Magna service grips on it once. Just once. The target grips on the 57 are OK, but at the end of the day the Pachy's just work better. Something to think about.

Indeed Charlie98. I am not particularly "recoil sensitive" however, that being said, I'm not against making things a little more comfortable...especially the older I get!

Yes please. I'm always interested in Chrono data.

With the CP 250grn gas check...

19.0grn H110, which I think was the minimum load with CP's data posted online, I got 1330fps out of my 6" Dan Wesson, but 1660fps out of the 20" Marlin (yes, with MicroGroove rifling.)

I don't have any data with IMR4227, but I should have it next week when I get back.

Compare that with 18.5grn W296 (older lot, pre H110/W296 combination) and the Montana Bullet Works 215grn Keith bullet...

1100fps from my 4" Smith, 1190fps from the 6" DW, and 1620fps from the Marlin... I was actually surprised the velocity wasn't higher compared to the H110 loads above, but I definitely think H110 works better with the heavier bullets, and particularly with jacketed bullets. I've got some 210grn Remington JSP's, loaded over W296 they were in the 1700's out of the Marlin.

Federal also has/had a factory 250grn cast load, only 1200fps from my Dan Wesson, and a measly 1500fps from the Marlin, although I suspect that's about what I will see with my test loads with the 250grn/IMR4227 combo.
