.41 Mag Association

remmy1.jpg I ran two groups of 5 rounds each over the chronograph. The average out of my 4 5/8" Ruger Blackhawk was 1776 fps. Yes, you read that right. It's a stout load. I also checked a load of Montanabulletworks 220 gr. loaded over 19.7 gr. of Hodgdon 110. That's just a tad over their starting weight of 19.5. Again fired from my Ruger, the velocity averaged 1766. That also is a stout load. Both are very accurate rounds. Montanabulletworks.jpg And finally I ran a few 41 Special loads. These were 210 grain Berry's Plated Bullets loaded with Titegroup. I don't remember the charge, my notes are in the shop. They averaged 934 fps. A pleasure to shoot. Just thought I'd throw this information out there for everyone. BTW the folks at Luckygunner.com have the best price on the Remington loads and I'll be ordering more of those Montanabulletworks bullets.

Wow. I only chronoed a couple of rounds from the .41 Mag HTP Remington from my 6” Model 57 and they were 1285 and 1338 fps respectively. I was just setting up the Chrono and playing with some different rounds. Your numbers seem WAY out of line with what Remington says that should be.

Link here shows 1300 fps is Remington’s spec.

I don't have any data with IMR4227, but I should have it next week when I get back.

As a follow up to my other data... I did shoot some test loads out of the Marlin over the chrono this weekend...

20grn IMR4227 and a commercial cast 215grn bullet: 1525fps.

I also did a little informal test between 3 different primers; I had a question about which primer would be best for IMR4227... a standard or magnum... so I loaded up some CCI 300's (standard,) some WLP's (standard or Magnum,) and some Federal Magnums. Although the velocities were comparable, the spread showed the standard CCI #300 was the hot ticket with only a 7fps spread between 5 rounds. The WLP's gave a spread of 39fps, and the Federal's 44fps.

Other data...

18grn H110, 225grn Montana Keith, 1560fps (Marlin)
18grn H110, 250grn Cast Performance, 1550fps (Marlin.)

It's interesting to note how close the velocity was between the two bullets... my only guess is either the hardness of the bullet, or the longer Marlin barrel really equals things out with something like H110.

With the addition of the Charter Arms 41 Mag Pug I realized that I now had accumulated three short barreled 41’s. The top one is a Ruger Redhawk, the middle is a Taurus 415 stainless steel and the bottom one is my new Charter Arms Mag Pug.

Im still think about picking up a Charter 41mag , what SD load would you suggest out of a 41 mag snubbie ?

Now don't beat me up fellas, I don't own one yet but this discussion is full of useful information and from it I have decided I have to have one.
It'll be a bit before I pull the trigger but it is definitely going to be added to the battery.
I have in the past read and heard that the 41mag was preferred by a lot of folks over the 44mag even. I am not really a fan of the 44mag personally. Not a bad cartridge, just not my cup of tea. However the 41mag has always intrigued me and so I'm going to get my own experience from one. I'm a big Ruger fan so it will probably be a Black Hawk. For a trail sidearm I prefer a 5-51/2 barrel and that would be it's function.
Thanks to all for the information.
Happy shooting!

I have wanted a .41 Mag ever since I bought my first .357 (and tried the .44 Mag and sold it). That's been more years back than I care to remember. Right after Thanksgiving last year, I purchased a ticket in a raffle a local youth shooting club was doing. One of the prizes was an old Model 57 6". It had been abused/used pretty hard and they had gone ahead and had it cerakoted and some Hogue grips put on it.
I bought $20 worth of tickets (5 total).
I was notified in January that I had won! I was told that I got my choice of one of the guns and I picked the 57. Now to get my loading bench set back up and start cranking out some rounds to play with!

I'm a major fan of the .41 mag and reload everything I shoot in my two revolvers. 18 grains of 2400 spits a 220 grain cast swc out of my OM BlackHawk at 1420 fps. My favorite 210 grain JHP load gets around 1350 fps with the same 18 grains. And that load is my favorite for deer.

The .41 BH is second from the left.

I had one of those Ruger Bisley 5.5" revolvers... I was doing backflips when I got it, it had been one of my Unobtanium guns for about 15 years. Unfortunately, it was not a good example and everything I tried did not make it a good shooter... and I sold it. I may give it another go one of these days... but my relationship with Ruger revolvers has not been a good one. In fact, that's what has held me off from buying a Redhawk .41, too.

Pistol grip. JM marking on the barrel. Came with box and all paperwork. Box says 2005 for a date.

I think that's the run I have... 1894FG. Really nothing to it... I've fired mine out to 800yds with cast bullets. I have a Williams receiver peep on mine, works great.

The longer barrel will benefit from slower powders.... Unique and slower. My current favorite is any 215grn bullet or heavier and IMR4227, but my Big Load is the Cast Performance 250grn FN gas checked bullet over H110.

Maybe? I was about 12 feet, although in both loads it was flattening primers. Hodgdon data shows that load at about 1550. Ill recheck standing a bit farther back and see how that does.
Finally made it back out today. This time I was 12 yards away. (roll eyes) Remington 210 jacketed softpoints out of my Blackhawk 4 5/8". Ave of 5 shots 1278. Out of my 20" Marlin rifle 1689. My reloads with Montanabulletworks 220 gr. was 1305. Shooting off a benched sandbag both were equally accurate. Rifle likes those cast bullets, but I can't get it to feed them. They are almost a square bullet. Been emailing Bruce and am going to try a different bullet for the rifle. Need to put some rounds down range as the rifle's tighter than all get out. All in all, had an enjoyable late afternoon. Went through a couple boxes of magnum loads and a box of specials. The rifle appears to feed those well too. Feeding wise, not a hick-up with the factory Remingtons. More to come...........

Off topic, but I looked at your profile pic and laughed my butt off!

No, they won't feed well unless you hold the rifle muzzle up and give the lever a little jiggle. I had some 220's a few weeks ago, they were a Keith design bullet, so they were a little longer than a normal 215grn SWC... certainly on the very edge of feeding reliability. If you are going up in bullet weight, you will have to pay attention to the length past the crimp groove, because of that, I've been going for more FP cast bullets like the Cast Performance.

Anyone else using Shooter's World Heavy Pistol powder for .41 Magnum? I could not find any loading data so I did my own testing.

All rounds were loaded with 210 grain Sierra JHP bullets in Starline brass with Winchester WLP primers. The rounds were fired in my Henry short rifle and the chronograph data is from a Labradar chronograph.

I was trying to duplicate my production H110 load of grains of 1692 FPS.

As always, your mileage may vary so be cautious about using this without working up a load for your firearm.

Been a while since I have been here... I usually get notifications of new posts but apparently have not been...nice to see so many converts...

wbbh...some impressive velocities...barrel length?

Checked with Jack Hunting about the Uberti Cattleman that is being made into a .41 Special...barrel still has not come back from being rebored....

Was out shooting my two FA 97s the other day. The 5.5" has a red FO front and the 4.25" a undercut Patridge.... With the current condition of the eyes it looks like I'll be putting a FO on the 4.25" also... Hopefully things will be corrected one day....

I also shoot that 250 grain LBT WFN from CP that the ammo companies use in their 250 HC loads. With 20.0 grains of H110 it runs 1305 from the 4.25" FA and is a real handful... I only got 1080 from a 4" S&W 57 with the Federal CastCore 250 load...

Nope. It's a Nickle Model 57 made in 1973. Here it is with the original wood grips. I put the Hogue grips on so I can refinish the originals. They are kind of beat up.View attachment 828433

...does your serial number have a "S" prefix? Just wondering because your front sight base appears to be held to the barrel with two pins... S&W only used that method on the Model 57 from 1964 to about 1968+-....

As to the finish...is it satin nickel or hard chrome...with that matte finish it almost looks like hard chrome...
