Here in PA, we have a "junior rifle" season for both bear and dear. My choices for my grandson is a 44 mag henry lever action or bolt action 350 legend, both of which he shoots fine and used the 350 during his first deer season. The question is for black bear is it safe to assume both are fine for sub 100 yard bear?
350 legend 170 Hornady interlock
44 mag Hornady 240 xtp
Alternatively I can introduce him to the 300 win mag.

My 'hunting rifle' for 40 years has been a trapper length Marlin .44 Mag. Never tried it on bear, but every deer (quite a lot of deer) was DRT; no running, no tracking. Recoil was reasonable; my 105lb daughter took a deer with it.
It should work well on a 100lb bear.

Either will work, bears are tough buggers and tend to run when hit. Good luck, and please post pics of success.

Both will work, which does you grandson like better and shoot better? That is the most important part, that he is confident in his ability and comfortable with the rifle. I would let him choose.

44 Mag would be my choice also, and I'd have gramps carry a 12 guage with slugs as backup just in case.
