44 mag Wadcutters

I have a couple of molds which drop .431 wadcutters. One is from Arsenal and the other is an ancient Lyman. Only one of my guns shoots them very well, which is probably a reason I've never really gotten into them. Beyond that, I have it in my head that wadcutters are for .38s and under. It is not very rational, but I don't fight it.

This tread made me wonder if anyone makes wadcutter projectiles for the 44? I'd appreciate any suggestions. I didn't want to hijack it, so I started this thread.

out of stock but they are made. I use them in Specials, not magnums.

I also have a few 190gr BNWC left over from the last big buy I made from Valiant. I load them using Blue Dot.

I plan to load them in 44Mag cases, but at 44Spcl velocities. Would that work out? My Blue Dot inventory is low, so I'm saving that for my 10mms, but I'm thinking Universal or 2400 for this particular load.

VERY COOL! Their 185 grainers list old load data!
Should work. Stateline says to use data from the Lymans cast manual but I don’t have one. The 2nd ed. Lyman’s pistol and revolver has data for everything but Universal. :(

Universal and Unique are fairly similar. I can make it work.
I am starting at 6.0 gr of unique for target loads

Do you crimp your cast WCs?
Ive got a ideal mold that drops them at 225 gr
. . . or NOE if you cast your own

Do you load these in 44 Spcl or Mag, Walkalong?

Yes. Light roll crimp. They aren’t making enough recoil for a hard crimp and while Blue Dot needs some time to get going and a load to push, and this is a light bullet, what I found was it was more consistent with a light crimp than a hard one.

It was mild shooting and very accurate at 25 yards.
I’m sure I did a thread on it long ago. I’ll have to look and see what the specs were.

Edit
5-6-14 “Wussy Cat 44 mag loads” was thread Best groups were 7.0 to 7.5 grains Win 231.

I load 44 wadcutters. No need for magnum pressures though. Get them up to 850-900fps and they'll penetrate plenty. For pocket pistols I like them in the 750-800fps range.

Matt's Bullets is where I got most of mine from 200grs to 250grs (if I'm remembering correctly). They work well for me.

It took a *long* time to find them, but I have several Lee and Lyman 44 wadcutter molds. I didn't not know why they aren't more popular.

My favorite is the Accurate 43-240W. Type 3 wadcutters - the wadcutter that loads like a standard velocity round, albeit with an elongated exposed tip.
