Last weekend I was looking in Lyman's 48th Ed Reloading Handbook for 45-70 loads for a 300 gr lead bullet in my T/C Encore. The 1886 Winchester/1895 Marlin section offered loads for a cast 293 bullet with several powders. All had a range from start loads to max loads of 4 - 6 grains of powder; except IMR 4198 powder which started at 34.5 grains and maxed out at 49.7 grains.

I thought this might be a typo, intending 34.5 to 39.7 grains, since the same chapter of 47-70 lever action loads showed a 300 JHP with a max load of 41.0grains of IMR 4198. But, a telephone call to the Ballistics Manager at Lyman confirmed the printed values as correct.

Is IMR 4198 that flexible for lead bullet loads? Any other explanations? I'm confused.

.45-70 is kinda weird, in that acceptable loads vary a LOT. What I mean is that you can use a little of a fast powder or a lot of a slow powder. Also varies greatly with firearm type

I use 55 gr of Varget with a 405 Speer. Range is 50-60 grains. I didn't refer to a burn chart but I suspect Varget is not too far off from your powder.

Tom Griffin at Lyman is in charge of their lab. You could call or e-mail him with your question. I'm sure he would be helpful.

I use H322 behind a 405 fp.....

in my TC Contender. Very accurate.......Kicks the crap out of you though but deer don't move after being hit.........chris3

Straight walls are nice in that you can burn pretty much anything in any amount in them. Face it,there basically a muzzleloader..Now weather you'll hit anything or not is where the trick is
