Does anyone load 45-70 with hornady dies to use in their lever gun? I'm concerned about the crimping situation. I know that everyone loves the Lee factory crimp dies, but do I need it? I would buy all lee, but I have a bunch of the short leverevolution brass, which I believe requires Hornady dies. What do you guys do?

Personally?

I would go with whatever brand of die I wanted.

Then, if the seat / crimp die won't crimp Hornady FTX short brass?

I would grind 1/8" of the base of the seating die so it would crimp anything.

I have Hornady 45/70 GOVT series ll 3 die set FULL LENGTH Item #546566
They work great for me. The seating die also crimps and is easy to adjust the amount desired. I do it on a RCBS Rockchucker. Easy as pie.
I load Leverevolution and regular length cases and it is easy to adjust one from another.

Hornady's 45-70 dies work just fine for lever guns. Matter of fact the shape of the collet in the seating die actually fits the flat pointed bullets used in the leverguns better than it does the long pointed heavy bullets we use in the Sharps etc.
The seating die is capable of putting on way more crimp than is necessary.
