45 ACP Large and Small Primer Brass

I use the same powder charges. Most of my 45 loads are mid-high range load data and they seem to perform comparable. If you are near max load data, I would be more concerned as primer flash/burn may vary.

I believe the amount of powder is pretty minimal, with that thought I doubt if it really makes much of a difference...:uhoh:

I would seperate, like for like, and shoot some of each, with same loading, and then combine, if you are concerned and do a testing of sorts:)

No, I use the same load but the small primer brass gives me better accuracy.

Thanks for the info. Never thought about accuracy. I was more worried about pressure. Why do they make this brass in both primer sizes anyway?

I ran chronograph tests on both and found that the .45 ACP using small pistol primers averaged 25 fps slower then those with large pistol primers. I used Winchester cases for both. Vertually no difference.

That's about my experience ... 3 loads out of 2 5" 1911s averaged about 5% lower velocity using small primer Win cases.

Lead free ammo uses lead free primers which are so powerful they cause problems. So they use the small kind and crimp them in. When the primer shortage hit, they used small primers and brass for standard ammo. I don't mind, actually I prefer them.

With the relatively small powder charges commonly used in reloading the .45 acp, a small pistol primer should have no trouble igniting the charge. As with any new loading combination, play it safe, start low and work up.

I really hate this, nothing jams up your reloading rhythm like hitting a small pocket with a large pistol primer. I had a chance to ask some of the guys at ATK and they said some companies are doing this to only need to stock one size primer.

I separate out the small primer brass.

I was tempted to crush and recycle them (considering they are a stoppage in reloading), but recently I believe I have come up with a better plan...I am saving them up and am tempted to drill out the primer flash holes and use them for wax loads.

Great., Another thing to look for!

How can you tell the small primer from the large primer?

SORRY! DON'T MEAN TO HIJACK YOUR THREAD!!

Snuffy,

I had googled some images and to be honest....They look the same to me...Maybe in person its much more easy to tell!

Definitely easier to tell in person.

I take all 45ACP brass. I deprime and run them thru SS media (even the nastiest of the nasty get clean). I store my brass by headstamp (definitely personal preference). I throw the SPP brass in a separate storage bin. They are included in my rotation and just reload them when I am already setup for 9mm which obviously also uses SPP. I think I may have a few hundred in my 45 ACP brass rotation. Sorting also prevents me from trying to shove a LPP into a SPP pocket.

Josh, I'm sorry I didn't know you had never handled them. Here's the difference in diameter from my micrometer, small pistol is.1745 .2103 or to round up to .175 and .211. Definitely hard to see from an internet pic.

Rifle and pistol primers are the same outside diameter, but large rifle is taller. Hence, the rifle primer POCKET is a bit deeper.:D

Yeah guys I tried some of each and could not tell the difference in my pistols. So the stuff that I make to put away that is NOT going to be reloaded in the foreseeable future is the small primer stuff. Also if it comes to another shortage, one primer size will be a bonus.:D
