I recently rented a Gen.3 Glock 21@ a local range. I found the recoil to be difficult to manage. I"ve read that the HK USP 45 has a system that greatly reduces the recoil of the .45 ACP round.

According to what I've read The recoil associated with the HK USP 45's is supposed to be comparable to the that of a 9mm.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

The USP does have a double spring buffer system, but I'm not sure it reduces the recoil that much. I haven't shot a Glock 21, but the USP is a lot nicer to shoot than a 1911.

I've shot both and yes the H&K is a sweet shooter. Feels about the same as a 9 - great trigger too. But the price - well...

You need to work out more.

A .45 ACP 1911 doesn't recoil enough to bother this nearly 70 year old weak man.

And both my sons were shooting 1911's when they were 10 years old or so.

I own a G21. I have shot a USP and didn't like the grip texture, but I have girly hands. I didn't notice a big difference in recoil, but I didn't shoot them side by side.

A G21 rental at the range has probably been flogged raw. ie; might need a new recoil spring assembly (rsa). Easily fixed with a new spring. My G21 is pretty timid until it's got her 10mm conversion barrel in er. The we go nuke! :neener:

HK's in general are very good in the recoil department. I don't know that I'd say it is as soft as a 9mm. Maybe a 9mm +P in a compact 9mm pistol. You usually get what you pay for until you reach the point of diminishing returns and that doesn't usually happen with guns until you get into the custom class of guns. Most production guns are worth about what they cost in terms of quality, reliability and shoot ability.

Maybe the case as the polymer frame on the Glock really does a good job absorbing the recoil shock and felt recoil is often less than other pistol brand/models of same caliber and of metal framed 1911s.

+1 on the HK USP 45 on recoil. Bud's showing $827 for last price on USP 45 and $852 for the compact.

Have you considered M&P45? If you haven't, I would suggest you try shooting one. It has better ergonomics than Glock 21 with full ambi-controls with adjustable grip inserts for that "Oooooohhhh - nice grip!" feel. For me, it recoils softer than G21 (same for M&P40 vs G22). Bud's has them listed at $498-$501
