Anyone out there able to compare the two? I really want a .454 Casull.
I already have a Redhawk in .44 Magnum and I know how good Ruger revolvers are but I've never owned a Taurus.

I've heard good things about the Raging Bull though.

THIS IS PROBABLY NOT THE ANSWER YOU ARE SEEKING, SIR.

When it comes to the 454CASULL cartridge I would not take 1000 Taurus RAGING BULL revolvers for one RUGER, nor 100 RUGER 454's for one FREEDOM ARMS 454CASULL revolver.
You get what you pay for in this world and when it comes to 60,000 pounds of pressure between my hands I want the best gun made to do the job. That would be the FREEDOM ARMS model 83, the father of the 454CASULL cartridge as we know it.

I understand Freedom Arms is great only their better revolver is considered "unsafe" according to the legislature here in California.
I can't get one.

Go Ruger, I'd say. This SRH is as strong as a tank, and fun to shoot too!

SIGarmed: I am pretty sure there is no problem with buying a FA model 83 in Calif. ( I know people who have recently purchased them with no problems). Single actions are exempt from the drop test.

I'll second Wil Terry's opinion...if you can swing it financially, get the FA.

I bought a Taurus RB454 a few months ago. Still saving money to buy the ammo for it....

From playing with the gun, it is definately a high quality piece. A very nice lockup, great trigger, and great finish (I chose the chrome/nickle finish for the ultimate pimp gun).

It was my experience that the Taurus RB454 cost about 100 bucks more than a SRH454. I am sure both are good. Handle both, get the one that feels better.

Thanks for the replies folks.

dvnv,

Great news because I didn't know it was single action never having fired one. That exempts it from these insane laws.

$2000+ for a FA 83?

That removes the FA from the running. Back to Taurus and Ruger.
I like the looks of the Taurus and it has a ported barrel. We shall see.

I have a problem. I already have a Ruger and I like to try different things.
What are the problems people are having with the Raging Bull?

SIGarmed: You can buy a used FA 83 for around $1,000 if you shop around the internet a little and (in my experience) most of them haven't been shot much. Not saying that is cheap, but if you can swing it, worth the extra $ IMHO.

Of the other 2, I would pick the Ruger...no experience to back it up, just don't trust a Taurus to hold up to the pounding, and figure a Ruger will hold its resale value better.

Porting is a mixed bag...my 454 is and it works for my style, but it makes an already loud gun louder (leads up with cast bullets?) and quite a few experienced handgunners don't like it.

FWIW, dvnv

I have a Ruger .454 7.5" with Mag-Na-Porting. It's schweet. Me likey. To me it fits in my hand better than the RB, and it looks better. I don't have a lot of experience with the RB, though.

I have a blued 6 1/2 inch Raging Bull and would not trade it for a SRH. I have shot both and the Taurus is by far much better for me. I have had no problems with it in the almost 3 years I have owned it. It is one of the most accurate handguns I own. Nothing bad to say about the Ruger I just went with what was more comftorable to shoot. I know youll hear alot of bad things about Taurus but I would bet money they are talking of the way Taurus was years ago, not now.
I have sold hundreds of Taurus revolvers in the past few years and not one has come back, I have had a couple of their semi autos that had to go back for warranty work but I have had all brands go back. Take a good hard look at both and then pick, you cant go wrong with either.

Hehe .. we've been here before!!

I got Raging Lunatic first (and don't quite agree with Wild as to waste of money ... tho I do not rate it like SRH and FA)... but would not want to use top SAAMI loads in it too much. This IS a very high pressure round when on top form.

I then got a 9 1/2 bbl SRH .. it is superior, no doubt in my mind ... and it sees most use. However ... and again apolagies for posting once more .... the Raging Lunatic does have some charm when muzzle flash comes out like in the pic! (OK - I post this at any excuse :p )

I'd like an FA but cost is high ... so got me a BFR in 45-70 :D

I waited until I found a really good deal on one used. It took years but I ended up with a SRH for only $350 in good shape. Functionaly perfect with just a few cosmetic flaws. Had I found a RB for $350 first, that's what I'd have.

My other revolver is an older Taurus 669 6" 357 Mag and it's been a fine gun.

My next revolver will soon be on it's way, a S&W 646. My brand loyalty knows no bounds ;)

PS: Reloading is a good idea for this round. You can get much less pressure by only sacrificing 50-100 FPS and save a lot of wear and tear on the guns. Not to mention save you the cost of factory ammo which is quite pricey.

Can some please tell Ruger to make the SRH with a full lug. I know it's strong enough and takes the extra weight off the pistol but it just looks wierd. Here you have this massive frame and then a dinky looking barrel sticking out of it.

I guess I'll just stick to my RB 454.

I actually prefer the balance w/o the underlug. The barrel only looks dinky because of all these new-fangled revolvers getting underlugs. The barrel on the SRH is a very thick hunk of stainless steel.

The under-lugs don't do anything for accuracy, they do add weight out front which helps with follow-up shots but speed shooting really isn't my goal with a 454 :D Id rather not have to try and hold the extra weight out front up for an extended period and have the quicker pointability of a ligher muzzle.

To each their own :)

I don't think the .454 SRH looks funny. I like its proportions, esp. with a 7.5" barrel.

Nothing wrong with the Raging Lunatic's visuals either, but it says "gettin' off the hook at the range!" while the Ruger says "Bring on the caribou."

One of these days some Hollywood director is going to see past the autoloader hoo-hah and have his lead villain pull out a big, shiny RB. (Its real-world unsuitability as a combat weapon is beside the point; look at all the Desert Eagles you see on film.)

Can't speak for these guns' balance -- no experience with crazy cannon stuff like .454.

Let me tell ya, the SRH points a LOT better than my 6" .50 AE Desert Eagle. I can't imagine the 10". Talk about nose heavy!

The DEagle is still a hoot to shoot however. Love the fireball although I could live without the brass hitting me in the head on occasion ;)

I was just eyeballing one of those RB's with a big 8" barrel today while picking up some reloading supplies.

I was thinking that...(much like shooting .38's out of my .357's)....I could shoot my .45 colt loads out of that thing all day, and a handful of .454 Casull's for grins & giggles.

Deffinitely a reloader's caliber.......

THE SRH would weigh 800 pounds with a full underlug, no need for one anyway. The barrel is exceptionally stout and balances well as is, I like the look.

Lordy, go with the RUGER!
