.454 Casull/RCBS die question

Am fixin to start reloading the .454. The RCBS die set specifies SWC only. Called the RCBS #. They said there might be an issue seating full length bullets. I talked to some caliming he used these same dies for 300 gr XTP's. Anybody have any insight to this problem? Am I stuck with Flat noses and wadcutters?

Can't help as such but . interesting. Just about to start loading myself for .454 ... tho in my case it's ''cheapskate'' and using Lee stuff.

I will in fact be using mostly hardcast own bullets but ... still woulda thought the full length heavy XTP's etc are loadable ..... main thing I'd imagine is to see what case capacity you have vs the finished OAL etc.. all compared with desired powder charge.

I must look into this ... hope tho someone else can give you some first hand info.

When I got my .454 I got hornady dies and the Lee factory crimp die with the carbize sizer. I've loaded up to 390 grain LBT bullets without problem

I've loaded a lot of 300 grain XTP's, both the standard an Mag model, with my RCBS .454 Casull dies. Never had a problem yet.

RCL and mohican . any pet loads? What powders do you favor?

I won't copy anything but interesting to have comparisons . I am quite new to reloading this cal. I have some 300 grn XTP's just itchin to get loaded!!

.454 casull loads.........

For the 300 XTP I use 26 grains of H110, for the 300 XTP Mag, (a version with a thicker jacket intended for heavy handgun loads), I like 28-29 grains of H110. These are loads I use for deer. They are not max loads, and are from the Hornady manual. They are safe in MY Feedom Arms revolver.

What are you worried about? Marred bullet points?
I seriously doubt that a marred bullet point on a 454Casull will throw off your load. I can see if you are making a 1000 yard shot with a rifle, but a Casull, you are not even at that order of magnitude. Maybe 100 yard shot, or 200yards.

Besides, bullet tips, unless you really mucked with the concentricity are not as crucial to accuracy. Bullet base has more effect on accuracy than the tip.
