Question isn’t specifically about the caliber, but the rifles and the big picture.

I have an AK-74, and I’m scouring the piggy bank to come up with the money for a fat house down payment. The AK is now going for around $1400 on Gunbroker. With the ammo I have I’d probably get an extra $300 more on top of that too.

Friend is offering me a 5.56 AR made by Rock River for $600 with 40 rounds of ammo.

I’ve never sold a gun in my life, but this seems like a great opportunity to move from a maybe less flexible platform to an at least equal one, that probably has more long term versatility. And let’s me come up with a little bit of spare cash at the same time. Am I overlooking anything?

AK is an early Waffen Werks build with their own receiver. They have a spotty rep. Mine hasn’t shown any problems, but also has a low round count. I mostly shoot my bolt action military surplus rifles.

Sell it. Waffen Werks rifles built on their own receivers are junk, if it had a NoDak Spud receiver (early ones were built with these, later ones built with Waffen’s in house out of spec receivers) I would keep it. Just be honest when posting it for sale on what it is and what receiver it has, along with the potential issues said receiver may cause. Since it was built on a Bulgarian kit, you should still be able to get a good price on it if you sell it as a parts kit.

Personally, I would take a high quality AK74 over an AR15 of similar quality any day.

Good time to be selling, but bad time to be buying, but $600 for a Rock River (RRA) AR seems like a good deal right now unless its in rough shape.

That's a great deal on the RRA if it's in any kind of working condition. A word of advice though, it may be awhile before you get to shoot it. 223 ammo supplies are tight right now and probably will be for a few months.

Yeah this gun has some surface scratches (mostly because my buddy kept it under his seat as a truck gun) so she ain’t the prettiest in the world, but seems functionally 100%.

Another plan is to sell the AK and not buy the AR for an even better mortgage down payment.

Of course, only you can decide which is the priority.

Undoubtedly, that would be my dear wife’s preferred outcome. That being said, there’s a silver lining. I can sell the AK now, use all the cash, and sit on the AR till cash is a little more at hand. It’s not going anywhere.
