picked up a never fired buckhunter today. real basic with plastic sight witch have pretty good sight picture. and black stock, got it for $25. never used one before, anyone have one and are there any tricks with these things. how does pyrodex work with them, i am not a fan of pellets. no real bp in NY but can go over state line for real black.

i figured for 25 bucks it as worth a try. does any place make a sabo for using 44/45 bullets. i have a 450 grain 50cal bullet mold for the 50/70 government could i try them. thanks troy.

It was my first front-stuffer. Got the biggest deer of my life with that rifle. I ran Pyrodex and PowerBelts in mine. It has been a while since I sold it, so I am a little fuzzy on the details. I remember that the reason I sold it, and my only complaint, was that the bolt was so heavy, and moved so far during firing, that the rifle would actually buck forward before the charge went off, hampering accuracy. Not that it couldn't hunt (obviously), but I found myself wanting more.

ya i have to see what the max load is, but i think i will start at 80gr and go from there. first thing i was was the long lock time, but with good follow through it should not be any problem. where i will use this is less the 100 yards. god this thing had so much packing grease in the barrel lol. thanks for the info.

Harvester and MMP make sabots for the .50 that will fit bullet diameters of .399 - .400, 429-.430, .451-.452, .457-.458 and .475 [Harvester].

The early Buckhunters may have had a slightly slower twist than the later Buckhunters [1 in 32" maybe], and then they started coming out with 209 conversions after initially utilizing #11 caps.
These guns also work well and clean up easily when used with American Pioneer powder - Shockey's Gold.
Slightly lighter and shorter bullets should work better than longer heavier ones, but any bullet is worth trying.

Which twist rate and ignition system does your gun have?
When was it made [last 2 digits of the serial number].
