556 AR pistol, or 9mm?

YES!! For shooting cans, a 9mm is absolutely the way to go. I'm running the cmmg radial delayed system with the emdomag conversion on an sbr'd lower. I can move from 223, to 300aac, to 9mm with just an upper and a mag swap. It's great. But the 9mm gets 40x the use of the other calibers combined.

By the way, I'm running an 8" 9mm and a 9" blackout suppressed, and when staying subsonic, they are still both too loud to shoot without ears. I think it's because your ear is right by the ejection port, as I do not need ears with subsonic 9 from a pistol when suppressed.

Speaking from experience, if you plan on shooting anything other than round nose bullets in a 9mm AR barrel, choose wisely when buying your barrel. Most 9mm AR barrels are notoriously short throated.
I had to buy a $60 cutter to throat two barrels. The cut job was easy, anybody with a tap handle can do it, but it did add another $60 to the total cost of gun.

That is worth noting. Thanks.

my question is why would you use an AR15 platform in 9mm instead of something designed for 9mm like the cz scorpion or any number of other options? some dedicated 9 offerings share some components or ergos with the AR, but still look more purpose built.

as everyone who has read my posts in rifle country for the past 15 years knows, i think the AR is the best gun ever made. but even i'm not convinced it's a better sub gun

don't get me wrong... it's not bad. i've seen lots of very functional 9mm conversions.

Since I love tinkering with ARs but I love budget builds, I've strayed away from AR9s as I would rather just get a CZ scorpion or Grand Power or even a Ruger PC carbine.

Because to have a great AR platform AR9, I'd have to spring for a CMMG. Because, in my opinion, a budget blowback AR9 is kind of a compromise... Kind of.

I'm sure I'll get one at some point, but I keep building rifle round ARs in all sizes instead of pistol calibers.

I my case I sold my scorpion and kept the radial delayed AR. Couple reasons. 1: it's softer shooting. delayed blowback is softer than straight blowback because you have about 1/2 the reciprocating mass. 2: ergos, while I don't love the ar ergos, the CZ's plain out suck. (I'll add in that the scorpion has a myriad of ergonomic design flaws, from the atrocious trigger pull to the safeties that dig into the finger to the absurd grip angle etc)
3: sbring: since I already had a SBR ar lower, I could build the cmmg upper with endo mag for under $500. The scorpion was going to cost double that.
4: concerning something else, what's out there? the mp5? it's a better gun, I'll give you that for sure, but it's 4x the cost of the cmmg upper. MPX? 3x the cost, and I've used it, it's not that great. ruger carbine? front heavy, and by the time I sbr'd it, 2x the cost. SUB2000, no thanks. uzi? costs a lot more, not a fan of the ergos. grandpower stribog? that was a real contender, but lost out on overall cost, and by keeping with the AR lower, I know I can work the trigger to anything I want.
5: availability. the ar9 parts are everywhere and easy to build into anything I want.

The Ruger PC is a great option.
My reasoning is I have only one AR. I've been told they are herd creatures...
