Hm, just tried drilling a hole in my Mossberg 500 mag follower. Holy crap. Shells fly out of the magazine, now. It's also much easier to load.
Dunno why they don't put holes in them at the factory. I'm definitely doing this to any future shotguns I own, regardless of whether they're a Mossberg or Remington.
RyanM---Glad to have passed helpful modifications along.I just put three 1/8" holes in mine just in from the follower wall,near the edge...amazing results here! It even feeds well full of water...a bit sluggish(hmm,punny)tho'. I am thinking about putting a 1/4" hole in the center to speed water passage.
Hardly. To judge a shotgun based on an inferior tube spring is ridiculous. I could fill my entire screen listing the "current" 870's weaknesses, but I won't bother.
To the OP- Just invest in a set of Wolff springs. Get the "universal" type...not the "fitted." Then, cut and shape the ends as needed. I did this about 500 rounds ago, for my 590, and have had no problems since.
To me, the tapered Mossberg tube spring is really the only weakness of the gun. I am sure there is a good reason this spring is tapered, but based on what I have seen and experienced, the design is flawed. Good news is that this "problem" is easily and inexpensively remedied.
Don't fret. Just go with a different spring. Problem solved.
