For the reloader there might be better powders than H1000, but living in MT I want/need temperature stable powders. I like Varget for my 6.5x47mm Lapua for that reason even though I could get more velocity from other powders. @LoonWulf lives in Hawaii where the temperature range is much narrower so he might get excellent results with powders that work well over a narrower temperature range. I'll be following along as he reports back on his 6.5 PRC.

There was a big brush fire in Maui yesterday so hopefully that didn't affect him at all.

I'm not sure when hunting became an exercise in physics but people seem to like to do the mental gymnastics involved with the 500 yd. shot. Most game is shot at 200 yds or less. Why, because most people just can't shoot well enough to be effective beyond that range. That may not sound sexy or sell new cartridges but it's a fact.

Here's an article that mirrors my experience.

It fills a gap as a 6.5 short magnum. But there are so many new cartridges coming out in the last decade that I can't see how all of them will be supported. No matter how useful each is, there is so much overlap.

The point I tried to make was that the 6.5 PRC isn’t comparable with the 6.5 Creedmoor from a hunting perspective — it’s a half step up in terms or energy and drop/drift.

With regards to the 270 Win, the PRC would get to 500 yards with four inches less drop and three inches leas drift (at 10 mph crosswind). Is that enough to matter? Certainly not to me, but maybe to someone else.

Well...

270 Win 145 gr ELD-X® Precision Hunter®

More like a little over an inch.

The point is, it's a solution - to a problem already solved.

ES numbers were ridiculous and accuracy/precision were nothing to boast about.
That was certainly my findings with 6MM Creedmoor shooting Hornady 108 ELD Match and Hornady Black 105 HP in a Seekins Havok. Yea, one rifle, but a better rifle/barrel isn't going to help the large ES of both rounds. The ES of both were big enough to cause misses at longer ranges. Not that it is bad ammo, but it's not great ammo.

Let's stay on track, it's not a .270 vs thread. ;)

I know a couple of folks who want a 6.5 PRC, and if I had to guess, I think it will maintain good popularity for some time. It certainly won't go away.

Just tryin' to find its spot.

And it looks like that is the 600 yard line and beyond.

It catches the .270 WSM there, w/ 10% less muzzle energy, and stretches the lead with range.

Over sane hunting ranges ( < 400 yds) it's in a group, and in the 400-600 yard range the .270 WSM shots flatter.

So, > 600 yards it will shine... for someone.
