Hey everyone my mentor and I were talking about various 6.5’s ( 6.5-06,.264 win mag 6.5x284 Norma) for we are both 6.5 nuts and he informed me his next one would be a 6.5 prc probably an X bolt so I need someone to give me the inside scoop on the 6.5 prc why did it come about is it that much better than the 6.5 Creedmoor we both own also this rifle is for elk hunting so keep that in mind why would you go to that instead of one of the others I listed?

Thanks y’all

At one point in recent history I had a 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5-284, and 6.5 PRC all at the same time.

*these were all with 140gr bullets, and what I decided were max loads*
Velocity wise
6.5 Creedmoor - 2800 FPS
6.5-284 - 2950 / 3000 FPS
6.5 PRC - 3050 / 3150 FPS (I was WAY over what was then published data to get to 3150 with Retumbo, tho the only reason I stopped is id reached the velocity I wanted and was running out of case capacity quick)

All from 24-in barrels.

Where I just starting out with the 6.5's and was I intending to use them for hunting larger game and at ranges exceeding what I normally do here, I definitely go from one of the larger 6.5's.

At this point most likely the 6.5 PRC.

But since I was already invested in the 6.5 Creedmoor, and have other guns that can take care of hunting duties that the 6.5 Creedmoor is not ideal for, I found that I didn't use the -284 or the PRC.

If elk is on the menu, buy a larger cartridge. Yes I know a 6.5 Creedmore will kill an elk, so has the .25-35. I never understood the idea of spending $6-8K for an elk hunt and using a marginal caliber.
Personally the only thing that the 6.5 PRC has over: 6.5 Remington Magnum, 6.5-06, 6.5x284, or the .264 Winchester Magnum is Hornady's marketing strategies.

Good Luck

I’ve read an article where it was described as a ‘unbelted magnum’ round. I have a Sauer 100, 6.5 PRC, the recoil feels about like my 270 Win. For target shooting I prefer the 6mm Creedmoor over the 6.5PRC.

For as much as I enjoy the accuracy and the shootability of my 6.5mm Creedmoor, I see no reason at this time to get a ”bigger” 6.5mm rifle. The PRC is about 200ft/sec ahead of same weight, hand loaded bullets from my 280 Rem. More money for the same results with plinking or hunting is what I can’t do now.
IF someone has a capability gap, saw between a .22 or .24 cal and a .30 cal then a PRC could be a great fit. I guess I’m too far along in my rifle collection.

My 6.5 prc has been accurate, and 1-1 on kills drt. It's a easy round to load for even with the still limited data and powders around, recoil feels less then a 270win in my m18 mauser.

hornady brass is the Only downside, it's soft like butter. Even starting loads leave ejector marks and don't see brass lasting many more then 3 firings from virgin brass, less from factory loaded. I settled on a 3/4 power load, and see the round has a common accuracy node around 57.0-58.0 of h-1000.

Lapua is supposed to have brass this year it should be good, the adg/gun werks is great getting over 10 firings but hard to find.

Hornady's marketing strategies.
And backing. They have proven to take better care of their cartridge offspring than most of the other companies.
I want to know how the 264 Win performs.
Give me a couple of weeks, barrels are at the post office now should pick them up at the beginning of the week and then I'm just waiting on reamers to get started.
