I'm generally not an AR guy. In fact, my converted Saiga's like a third arm to me now.

But I'm also a huge tinker, can't make my class homework take up all my day, and don't currently have a project for the lathe and mill.

And I don't need another caliber, or I'd just go and buy something used in .223.

So, my long-term idea is to start buying parts I can't make, and make the parts I can, and start nudging together an AR in x39. But I don't have much AR knowledge, and my Google-fu is suffering from some bad karma tonight.

So, when searching out an upper, are the M4 ramps desirable for the commie caliber, or are they specific for small-bore?

I don't know if this is the answer you want but a standard feed ramp is your best bet as you have material you can shave off as needed.

My 7.62x39 AR has M4 feed ramps and with the problems it has with JHP ammo I find it hard to believe it'd feed anything without them.

I like my x39 AR and since the bullet tip is not in the same spot ramming forward, I think ramps or not you may need some slight dremel work at most. Mine cycles fine with the only changes being a stronger buffer spring to absorb more recoil. The cases would launch into orbit with the standard 5.56 spring. An H2 buffer would be nice too. The x39 AR's are a little hard on the bolt if you don't keep the bolt locked a little longer

The M4 ramps work fine on both of mine for everything but the round-nose soft-point Prvi ammo.

More important than the ramp is finding some mags that will work properly; which might be tough right now since C-Products were the only ones i know of, and that company isn't around anymore.
