Quick 870 Question. I recently purchased a slug barrel for my 870 Wingmaster.

Everything looked OK, but once I out the barrel on I noticed that the end cap did not seem to screw down all the way. Barrel remained slightly loose.

I took a closer look and noticed that the ring where the end cap sits did not have a metal bead similar to our other 870 barrels (locks down end cap). Before I complain to the guy I bought this from. Does anyone know if this is normal? Maybe there is a different cap I need.

Thanks!

Pat

Is it a Remington factory barrel? The barrel remaining loose is a BAD sign! Be sure the barrel is fully seated in the receiver before tightening the end cap. I think I have a Mossberg barrel without a detent, but it still locks up solidly.

You got a barrel for one of the newer Remington Express guns. These guns do not have a magazine cap detent in the barrel ring. This is due to Remington changing the line so that it could no longer accept magazine tube extensions.

I know that many places like Cabelas or Bass Pro do not differentiate the "old style" vs "new style" barrel. By old and new style I'm referring to whether it has the magazine cap detent in the barrel band or not. When I called Bass Pro to order a barrel through their catalog all the customer sales rep could tell me was that the barrel I wanted " Would fit all Remington 870 shotguns". When I specifically asked about the mag cap detent she didn't have a clue - I was not surprised.

Take a look here for some discussion about this issue.

Looks like I will use an O-Ring to keep it snug over the weekend and then take it to the Gunsmith.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

patmac: I ran into the same problem earlier this year with a new Remington Super Slug Cantilever barrel for my 870 Express. Heres what I did: I emailed Remington (they responded within 2 days) on there website and explained the problem. Since I bought this shotgun new in 1987 they had me send it to an authorized Remington Repair Center. The cost was covered under WARRANTY (shipping included)! You can also take it to your gunsmith also. Cost will be around $35 or more to add the ball detent. I'm not sure what year Remington changed this style, but it was in the mid 90's I believe. Good luck.

I got a response from Remington and they offered to add the ball detent free of charge. I am just responsible for shipping to the factory in Illion. Glad I stopped here to ask.....

Only thing that was a little odd is that my 870 is a 1991 Model and still required the ball detent. I was originally told by Remington that the detent was only on 1987 and prior models. I called back with my Model number and they said the detents were phased out starting in '87 but were still used in some models as late as the early 1990's.

Anyway, I'm shipping it out right after deer season.

Thanks again
