I have been using IMR4064 due to the groups I was getting but after I bought a chrono I saw I was getting only 2450 or so with 47.0 grains under a 150 horn spirepoint. That load is way over the listed max by Hodgdon. I was going to try H4895 as it is a faster powder and hodgdon has it listed to go 2900+ fps at a more realistic charge weight. Does anyone have experience with this combiation of gun+caliber+bullet+powder? Thanks guys and Happy New Year!

The only powder I've ever loaded in 7.92x57 (8mm Mauser) is IMR 4895. It works great, is accurate and gives the velocities I want, which are in the range you're looking for.

Hope this helps.

what kind of velocity are you getting Dakotasin? I am looking for 2800fps give or take to try and get close to the german battle round equivalent. I know they used 154's but this'll do for me.

my most accurate load runs out of my 19" shilen at about 2600 f/s. in some of my hotter loads i was able to approach 2700 f/s, but never broke that mark.

a sidenote: i have found barrel length to have minimal impact in the 8x57. in another mauser i destroyed as a test mule, from 26" down to 17.5" there was a grand total of 25 f/s difference in velocity at the extreme ends.

so, if you are looking to get 2800 f/s, i do not think you can safely achieve that w/ 175 grain bullets.

My compiled data "One Book/One Caliber" for the 8mm Mauser shows that you'll have to be around 49 to 50 grs of IMR4064 to get 2,800 fps and that is pretty constant with all published data. Though a particular gun may just shoot slow and you'll not be able to get that velocity staying within safe pressures.

FWIW most data lists 8mm JS loads with 150gr bullet at maximum between 2,800 and 2,900 fps and IMR4064 is THE powder that puts them at that velocity. In the Speer #13 no other powder gets past a few FPS ovfer 2,700. As this is equal to 30-06 velocity with a 150gr bullet it should be quite adequate.

Well according to my loads....47.0 grains of 4064 only go about 2450 fps....I don't think i could make up the 400fps with 2 or 3 grains of powder...in my experience at least
