Not everyone is up to carrying a firearm and even a knife. What do you think about a 900,000 volt stungun?

I'm thinking about getting one for my wife. I have one for myself.

Problem is I don't think I've found one yet that looks anything like robust, quality product. Even that 900,000 volt stungun which I bought online for about $40 - $50 (I forget) feels cheap. 5 years ago, I got dozens of 100,000 volt stunguns and sold them at swapmeets but gave up that business shortly, and I was left with about a dozen extras; none of them work anymore -- some piece or other would be broken off. Cheap stuff.

Also, does anybody know where you can buy a quality product? I'd sure hate the battery contacts to rattle off due to cheapness, in a critical situation.

Also problem with this 900,000 volt unit is it's slow to deploy. If you need it real fast, here are the things you need to do (let's assume you have the batteries in place ;-)

1. Pull the unit out of the holster
2. Wrap the safety pin bracelet around your wrist
3. Put the safety pin into the socket of the unit (the purpose of the safety pin is to prevent the bad guy from using the unit on you if you should lose control of the unit; theoretically, if you lose the unit, the safety pin will detach from the unit preventing its use)
4. Switch the unit to "On"
5. Then, finally push the trigger button to activate

The bad guy is not going to wait around while you do all that. And you better not fumble around with step #3, which could happen in a stress situation.

About the only use I have seen for stunguns is playing around with your friends, sneaking up on them and ZAP!

You better be able to run real fast, they hurt but they really do not slow up people in good shape.:what:

It is not the voltage that is important but the amperage, and none of them put out enough amps (more like microamps) to have any serious effects.

Would a really big rubber band be sufficient for self defense? The effect of getting zapped with an electrostatic "stun gun" is pretty much identical to getting snapped with a rubber band.

Tazers are a whole different ball game, though.

I used to sell non-lethal self defense products as a full time business. I tested products on myself to see if they worked. I have also provided physical security for raves and casinos. I have seen the effects of these products firsthand. Most stun guns are NOT EFFECTIVE! They are not pleasant to be zapped with but do not incapacitate people.

An A.S.P. (or similar baton), O.C. spray, quality folding knife,kubotan/flashlight, or taser are more viable options. They DO work most of the time. I and my former co-workers have had to use them in the past and can vouch for this. The only stun guns I'd trust are the Myotron, and also the Taser International- you can use their products as a taser or a stun gun.

If you don't believe me- try it on yourself. It won't knock you out and you'll never make the mistake of carrying one as "protection"

Many people believe that the mere sight/sound of a stun gun will dissuade an attacker. If the situation is serious enough to warrant using a stun gun (an armed assailant for example) they will likely shoot/cut/beat you.

IMHO- Anthony

Thanks. I've never tried a stungun on myself. OK, that' solves that. Stunguns are no good for SD. I'll look into tasers.
