9mm 124gr plated

any opinions on w231 or universal clays been useing hs-6 would like to try somethig different that will meter well load will be for 124gr plated just for
pounching paper and fun. Local man store stocks both powders

I use Bullseye for my 124 grain plated loads. Meters well and is thrifty too.

I imagine a lot of people will chime in with W231, which is my go to powder with lead 124 grain bullets.
 
I load Berry's 124 gr FPHBDS over 4.8 gr W231. It seems to be accurate anywhere over 4.4. I sometimes shoot a Gen4 G19, so I load 'em up to Hodgdon's max. To reproduce watered down wally world fodder, you will probably end up around 4.6.

Unique, I use 5.4gr for a similar recoil level.
 
Universal meters well for me and works great in 9mm 124 loads. 4.2 grains yields right around 1,075 fps.
If you want to try an underrated, but excellent 9mm powder, try IMR SR 7625. Meters great, burns cool (single base) and clean. 4.6 grains gets me 1,050 fps in a G-19.
 
4.8 gr is max for lead but not jacketed. You can actually go to mid range jacketed which is several tents higher. 4.7 gr works and is a soft shooter but made the slide function sluggish on my Sig229. The reason I bumped it up a tenth to 4.8 gr. No sighs of over pressure.

This is with WSF powder.

Both Bullseye and W-231 meter well and provide small velocity variation witrh the 124 gr. plated 9mm bullets

4.3 is perfect however with a 124gr LTCN
I was on my smart phone and should have better explained my post.

That load was for the larger diameter Berry's bullet (.356") shot from Lone Wolf barrel (.355") at 1.135" OAL which results in less powder ignition gas leakage.

Many factory barrels are oversized in diameter and have longer leade (distance the bullet "jumps" from case neck to the start of rifling) that leaks a lot more of powder ignition gas. For smaller diameter plated bullets like Rainier (.355"), I need to use more powder (comparable to jacketed load data) when shooting from factory Glock barrels. Many have posted on the looseness of PT92 barrels and that explains your experience having needed to use higher powder charge to reliably cycle the slide.

Because of production variations in pistols/recoil spring rates/barrel diameters/barrel lengths/leade lengths, we need to individually perform load work up to determine the load that will reliably cycle the slide. :D
 
PO2Hammer, You were correct I listed the wrong powder. WSF is what I use for 9mm, 124gr.

I Corrected my earlier post.

The load is still good for WST but not the lead plated bullet.
 
I think that was REL1203.

FWIW, I tried HP-38 (W231) today in 9mm with the .356" 125 grain HAP bullet in my Glock 19. 4.5 grains gave 1,065 fps with an extreme spread of 26 fps from thrown charges.
Seems like a winner, very accurate. Recoil and muzzle blast were moderate.
 
As far as metering goes, I looked back in my notes and found these results, all loads w/125 HAP, same COL and charges thrown from my Redding 10X.
Extreme spreads:
Titegroup - 47 fps
SR 7625 - 65 fps
Universal - 30 fps
HP-38 -26 fps.

Since Universal is a little slower than HP-38 and delivers good consistency, I think I'll explore Universal for my hot 9mm loads with 125 gr. HAP's and 124 gr. XTP's.

HP-38/W231 may be a better target powder in 9mm.

I am phasing out Titegroup.
