In a recent post of mine some members recommended CMC shooting stars for my RIA 1911 10MM. I don't see them on CMC website, only CMC Classics. Then I read where CMC sold their Shooting Star line to Wilson Combat.
1. What is the difference between their Shooting Star mags and their Classic mags, specifically in terms of reliability.
2.I don't see shooting star magazines available under the new name CMC/Shooting Star. Would they be available under the Wilson brand?
I found where their CMC Classic mags are for sale for about $25. If anyone has any experience with them I would love to hear about it. I bought a Kimber 1911 mag and tried it in my RIA but it would not stay seated and would partially eject on the last round. So, I returned it to the store.
Thanks in advance.

CMC mags are best known for using the Devel follower. It was one of the more successful attempts at finding a follower that would allow putting 8 rounds in a tube designed for 7.

In McCormick's line-up, the Shooting Stars were McCormick's "economy" line. The Match Grade was a step up, and the PowerMag was their top of the line until the RPM showed up.

McCormick's website has changed recently as Wilson tweaks the product line.

The "Classic" full size 8 rounder seems to be what the Shooting Stars used to be. The full size 7 rounder uses what appears to be a GI follower and seems to be a new option.

If you've got to have a Shooting Star marked mag, they've been around for some time, and I suspect a variety of retailers still carry them.

Does the mag that came with the gun do this? It sounds like a gun issue more than a mag issue.

However, it could be a user issue if it was a Kimber 8 rounder as those, like the McCormick mags, are 8 rounders in a 7 rounder body, and it is a tight squeeze, and possibly you didn't fully seat the mag (common with the slide forward).

Well, that makes me feel better about spending money on the Classic CMC. Strangely enough, when I bought the RIA the LGS stuck a stainless 8 round mag in the gun for display. So, when I bought it it came with the stainless and the original black mag that will come unseated when the gun is fired. The stainless mag works perfectly. Trouble is there is no ID on the stainless as to its maker. Just marked 10MM and a patent #.

If the patent # is on the follower, and follower looks like this

it was probably a CheckMate mag. CheckMate makes a bunch of mags for a variety of gun makers.

I believe Wilson Combat uses the CheckMate Patented Follower (CMF) in their 10mm mags.

As does Tripp Research

This follower is basically the Devel follower McCormick used, but adds a front leg or skirt, to keep the follower from tipping forward after the last round is fired.

It appears to be the same magazine and follower as the Checkmate with the patent # visible. It is an 8 round mag. Thanks, JTQ. Bottom line, I should be good with the Chip McCormick Classic magazines.b
On a side note, I contacted RIA about the magazine issue. They will be sending me another of their black magazines. If it doesn't work also, I can use it as fodder for trade.
