I tried searching this forum and didn't have much luck although I know that there is plenty of information on here about the M1 Carbines for sale thru CMP. (The search function wouldn't allow the term M1 when used with carbine for some reason; said it was too short.)

I am not a collector in the traditional sense; neither am I looking at this as a money making financial investment.

My question is: Which of the manufacturers listed on the CMP site for Service Grade is the best deal for the money and why?

If you are looking for a shooter grade, I think that any one of the manufacturers would do just fine. All manufacturers were held to meet certain tolerances and the carbines needed to meet the minimum standards of accuracy before being accepted into service.

(I believe that was 5 out of 7 consecutive shots in a 4" tombstone-shaped target at 25 yards)

I own both an Underwood cabine (that I bought at a gunshow) and a CMP Inland SG carbine (bought at Camp Butner during the CMP East games). My Inland is a tad more accurate than the Underwood, but my Underwood has the original barrel with a worn muzzle whereas my Inland has a replacement barrel with a muzzle that gauges a ZERO.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with any of the CMP service grade carbines.

For a shooter anyone will work. The most over rated one and worst deal is the Winchester. They are charging a premium for it because of the name. There are some lower volume manufactered carbine for sale at a lower price than the Winchesters.

What those guys said.............. All of the CMP carbines have been re-arsenaled at least once and many do not have the original barrels, (and sometimes the barrel manufacturer and the receiver manufacturer don't match either). What they DO have is all U.S. Government Issue parts.

CMP is pretty good at "reading their market" when it comes to pricing. No guarantees, but the $495 Inlands are probably just as good as the $675 Winchesters. They figure there are lots of folks who are Winchester fans and will pay more for one. So why are Inlands so cheap? Inland made more carbines than all of the other manufacturers combined.

Buy what flips your kilt and don't waste a lot of time trying to figure out which is "better" - you'll only get a headache.............
