alright, i went to gander mountain the other night to get a new mag for my G-33. while there i saw an odd looking used ruger gp-100, the label said it was a Ruger GP-141, the gun was stamped gp-100. Since ive seen many a gun mislabeled at gander i had my suspisions. i asked the lady behind the counter to see it and what the story was behind it. the gun itself looked like a gp-100 but it was DAO with a bobbed hammer, fixed sights, and half underlug. It's finished in stainless steel. the women said that the gun was made special for the canadian mounties and that they had traded them. the gun came with a safariland holster that looked new a speed load pouch stamped with a logo and the words "police" and "canada" and some others i cant make out. it also came with a safari land speed loader, all for $280.00. i bought it. but im not sure what i bought. nice gun, but...(scratches head). i know the story about it being mounty owned checks out, its hand engraved under the cylinder. anyone have a clue what it is???

GP-141 means that it is carbon steel, 4 inch barrel, full underlug, adjustable sights.

KGPF-340 was the designation for stainless steel, 4 inch, half underlug, fixed sights.

Maybe a mix up with the box?

Those DAO variants were made for a number of police agencies. Combined with the Canada-marked holster, and it's a good bet the dealer was telling the truth.

It may have been mislabeled, but everything else she told you was correct.

And, that's not a bad price.

It was probably in service in Montreal, so you know, never been fired and only dropped once and all that.:D

Around here, those guns are going for $229. I saw one at the local show in fact.

My dad bought one a few months ago and loves it. It's not cosmetically perfect, but shoots fine.

Right, Ruger also did batches of these (mostly 4" tubes but a few 3", all DAO) for various police agencies in the US too, and God knows where else. Some Federal security cops (Fed courthouse security, etc) seem to have gotten some.

All the reports from people who've bought 'em on the used market (regardless of the original agency they're from) are positive. I rather doubt it's even possible for a police agency to shoot a GP100 loose :D.

I don't think the RCMP ever used these. They went right from the S&W M10 to DA-only S&W 9mm autos.

I have heard that Canadian Forces military police had the guns, and that may be true. Or, they may have been used by local or provincial Canadian cops.

Does anyone know for sure?

In the cobwebs of my mind, IIRC, these may have been RCMP foreign embassy issue. The RCMP has responsibility for embassy protection. I believe the foreign service RCMP Mounties used this revolver.

I have been eyeying these pistols for a while now. My question is would it be possible to by a non bobbed hammer and install it. Basicly turning it into a DA revolver?? Any ideas if this would work?

Yes, it would work, except that the sear engagement surfaces for any given hammer/trigger setup can be...tricky. Test the new combination THOROUGHLY for push-off problems (cock it and shove/wiggle to make sure it won't slip the sear). If there is ANY question that the new combination isn't fitting together perfectly, it'll need light gunsmithing by somebody who knows what they're doing.

Your odds of having it go together right the first time aren't bad, however.

Ruger doesn't sell GP100 hammers--they're 'factory install only' parts.
